Hence, the revolving nanny door. |

One toddler, $3608 a month. This includes all taxes for a nanny. Yes, it is expensive, but it is temporary. When school starts costs will drop, by then we'll likely have more than just one child, so it will be several years before the child care costs decrease. And even then there will be after school care and summer camps, so who knows what we'll need/want to pay for. Yes kids are expensive, but just this one little person in our lives has brought more joy than I realized existed in this world.
To anyone feeling like they're just handing over their pay check to pay for child care, be sure to factor in what may be deducted from your pay check for retirement. I felt much, much better about what little was left from my pay check when I remembered what I was saving for retirement. |
| Probably about $800. I SAH. Have a sitter one day a week for golf (during the summer) and then weekend nights here, probably at least one weekend a month. Its cheaper during the school year, but only recently so as my youngest is in preschool. |
| $1400/month for one toddler in an in-home daycare. |

You get your biggest raise once kids are out of preschool age childcare and into public school. Of course, there is still figuring out before and after care, sick days, and summer time coverage. University of Maryland's summer program for rising kindergarten through second graders is just wonderful and runs for six consecutive weeks. |
| $2,200 per month for a toddler in a downtown daycare and a school aged child. $1,700 for daycare and $500 a month for an after school babysitter. |

Gross up - it's like $100k of your income |
I paid over $1,700 per month for one child. This is what it costs in DC. The extra cost absolutely made sense. Paying a few hundred less for a cheaper place in a less convenient location would not have been worth it. I never had to worry about being late to pick him up. He was right across from my office. Now he is 3 stops away at school and I can't tell you the number of times I have been held up at work and barely made it on time. I was never late, but on the last day I used aftercare I arrived out of breath at 5:59. |

We pay our part-time nanny $11 per hour, cash. About 15 hours per week. Three kids, but older two are school-age. Exurbs.
I'd be poor in McLean. |
| About $28k/year for 2 kids, which includes full cost of an au pair, part-time preschool, summer camp, and fees for kid activities. |
