I just had mine inserted today and I will never do it again. I have no idea how my body will react to it in the future - I may later feel the pain was worth it. But as far as I am currently concerned, it was the most painful experience of my life. Even though I am on my period, my doctor still had to dilate my cervix....twice. I don't even know how long the pain lasted but I have never screamed so much in my life and I had waves of nausea for a few hours after. It felt like a white hot knife was slicing through my uterus for several minutes. It was like medieval torture. I brought my mother in case I could not drive after, and thank god I did cause I have had horrible cramps since the insertion. I took lots of precautions, was not tense (was telling stories and laughing up until she decided to dilate), have a Very high pain tolerance, and had taken 4 200mg pills of Motrin throughout the hours before hand. My doctor gave me a 600mg pill right after and wrote me a prescription for more. She said how sorry she was I went through that pain - she'd never seen a reaction THAT bad - but assured me that everything went alright and the trouble had been my incredibly tight cervix (no children). Every other woman I know who has gotten Mirena has loved it and no one has had anything close to my experience, so it is definitely a case by case basis. But I would recommend if you have never had a child and are not very sexually active (my bf lives overseas so I have been celibate for 6 months), to consider a different form of birth control before an IUD.
