The people who live there seem to have looked around at the rest of Singapore, noted the clean streets and green, lush grassy areas and public spaces, then collectively decided to reject standards of cleanliness en masse. After a festival or weekend night it's a mess. It's baffling to me that people would decide to live that way when everywhere else in Singapore is so pristine.

Cleaning also requires time, and if the poor are too busy working, dealing with children, cooking, the last thing they are going to do is clean.

I was there in June, and there was no pollution. I will say that though there are no public trash bins around Korea. You have to carry your trash around with you.

But, the city is definitely clean, which is a feat for a city with close to 10million people. My teenage kids loved Seoul and how clean it was. We've been to NYC numerous times, so that's what they were comparing it to. My spouse and I also used to live in SF and London.

Seoul is definitely one of the cleanest large cities I've ever seen. It's unfortunate that they get the pollution from China.

You may also be overlooking fewer public services in that area. If trash pick ups don’t happen as often, etc.

By this standard it's Philadelphia for me. I have witnessed public defecation multiple times in center city.

It still is a shockingly beautiful place, almost surreally so. But I've traveled many places and there's only two cities in the world where someone has crapped on the sidewalk right in front of me: NYC and SF.

Yea right. I live in the Bay Area and go into SF at least twice a month and have never seen anyone crapping on the sidewalk, SF is very clean and surprisingly safe for a large city.

I believe them. I lived in Seattle and I saw a homeless man taking a dump in my neighbor's yard in broad daylight.

I was driving down Walter Reed in Arlington and saw someone take off their pants and poop on the grass! It was like 2pm. Insane
