Is it crazy to choose a non-ivy over an ivy

Anonymous
This whole thing is silly. Most people will be content with what is and not question a choice they made back when to turn down a higher ranked school as they don’t know what that would have been anyway. Maybe it would have been better, maybe not. Just chose on fit and move on.

No. But asking if it’s crazy to choose a non-ivy over an ivy is crazy.

Why do you care? Your kid is at Chris Newport.

My son turned down Cornell for Penn State last year and is SO happy. Graduating in three years with two degrees as well thanks to his 14 APs transferring (he had 5s on all of the tests).

Wow!! Brave kid! What are the two degrees?

East coast old money prefers Williams to almost all Ivies except HYP. West coast elites and Silicon Valley prefers Pomona, Harvey Mudd over at least 3-4 Ivies, and Stanford any day over all Ivies.

This is not true at all.

Your DC should prioritize her best fit and her choice, not anyone else's. And people turn down highly ranked or well hyped schools every day because another school fits them more. It's normal to do that and not just go by some generic ranking or pecking order.

Congrats to your DC on getting into her 1st choice!

My DC is doing it (not with an ivy though). Chose BC over Georgetown. I'm happy about it!

Georgetown in rejoicing - it's no place for MAGA spawn.

All done with your No Kings event I see.

Why do we care what old money prefers?

You’re on here debating about Ivies so you seem to care. The very construct of Ivies esp HYP were built by and still to this day run by old money. If you’re on campus and see who gets what kinds of opportunities and internships, you’d know. MC and poor kids don’t even know those opportunities exist.

You're really wrong on this. It doesn't get more old money than Dartmouth. My child is there and there is a huge boarding school contingent. Old money. Billionaire level in some cases.

This. I can't believe you even typed out that question for public consumption. You sound like a complete twit. Let your kid go where they feel they will fit best and stuff your enormous ego up your a@@.

That is what they said Karen…..learn to read.

Take your own advice, twit. Did you miss the "This"? clearly. Idiot.

If they don’t even know, I assume no one is sharing these opportunities with them. So why do they care what they prefer? Ivy offers so many opportunities already.

Ivies have weird vibes these days. My older child is at one. They are often an exceedingly random mix of kids---super academic grinders, underprepared FGLI kids from middle America, ultra wealthy who stick to themselves. It's a odd mix.

Smart choice. Fit is important. Prestige is illusion.

Prestige of UVA is definitely an illusion. Strong flagship, but not prestigious.

I'm not the poster you are responding to and have no affiliation with UVA but Yes it is. Any school with under a 14% acceptance rate is prestigious in my book and attracts the best of the best. Stop the nonsense.

Why 14% and not 15% or 20%.
