There is talent on that team but they have terrible attitudes with teammates yelling at each other. Total mean girl culture.

I am not sure where you are getting that impression, but this is far from accurate.

Have you watched them play? Pay attention when they are down or it's a close game. The coach is losing his mind and several players are beyond terrible to their teammates. Meanwhile Coach Nick is losing his mind with his theatrics.

Paramount 15 made into the Gold Bracket at Show Me and got an Open bid.

Theatrics? How about the Metro 16 coach getting ejected from their semifinal match at Show Me and having to be escorted away by security and the arbitrators? Oh, and his young daugther was sitting on the bench watching this all happen. He cost his team the match too. They were winning the 2nd set against TAV after already winning the first set. It was 21-21 in the 2nd set (after Metro won the first set). The red card made it 21-22, and then the double red/yellow ejection made it 21-23. They ended up losing in 3...

Did Bobby Knight behave like a chivalrous figure to secure victories? He did not, yet he is recognized as one of the greatest coaches.

Are there instances when any coach might wish they could retract their hasty reactions? Certainly. Every coach possesses a unique persona, and that individuality contributes to their effectiveness. They deserve both respect and understanding.

Um, I don't think Bobby Knight is the example you want to use. He was physically and emotionally abusive and used humiliation and confrontation has his tools to try to motivate his student athletes. He won games no doubt but his record should not be held up as a model for high school age volleyball players

It's also possible that neither is awful, and people like to get spun up and tell stories about how awful a club must be because they have intense coaches.

Many of Bobby Knight's players formed deep, lifelong bonds with him, often describing him as a mentor who cared for them immensely after their playing days, despite the famous narrative on his coaching tactics and occasional antics. Most players respected his discipline, valued his loyalty, and would choose to play for him again.

That's interesting, right? That the perception of someone based on some miscellaneous antics and episodes doesn't necessarily mean this is how he was treating players day in and day out. So yes, I do think PP (not me) intentionally chose to use Bobby Knight as their example.

As a father, I want and seek out tough coaches for my daughter. But Bobby Knight was a bully who physically assaulted players and had a pattern of intimidation and humiliation in front of teammates, according to some former players. I can't believe anyone would hold this example up for a model to emulate. I don't question that he formed positive relations with many of his players but coaching style was toxic, to put it mildly. His profanity laced tirades at fans, the media, and others were unhinged.

Point of the story is that tough intense coaches are good. Think Tom Izzo. Psycho, narcissistic coaches who can't control themselves are bad. And this isn't college or professional volleyball. These are high school girls. Come on people.

Knight was not a mysterious figure. He displayed behavior that many would characterize as rude and aggressive. For some, particularly those who prioritize winning and losing, his conduct might have been overlooked due to his impressive coaching achievements. Throwing chairs, criticizing numerous referees, and verbally attacking almost anyone associated with the game, whether players or opponents, were part of his approach. He also made disparaging remarks to female sportswriters about their roles and suggested to a sports official from Puerto Rico that his country’s contributions were limited to agriculture. This behavior was often accepted by those who adhere to the philosophy of prioritizing victory above all else.

At the end of the day, Knight was a jerk and bully.

Is it possible that you justify emotional abuse and call it “tough coaching”. Makes me wonder what kind of parent you are….

It’s a far, far leap for anyone to suggest that either of the coaches named in this thread are near the Bobby Knight level. Good grief.
