It makes the DC private school forum look positively sane and well-adjusted by comparison. And that's no easy feat.

I would never be snarky with a parent who is fighting for what’s best for their child, so long as it doesn’t disparage other children or directly affect them beyond what is already a zero sum game. Sorry your child didn’t have an advocate in you.

It's awesome that you keep demonstrating the lunacy. "What's best for their child" - these kids are all born on third, have a big lead, and will all be more than fine - but parents are in despair because their first choice elementary school put them on the wait list, and they may have to attend another one that is just as good.

As for as the passive aggressive comment at the end, that was pretty lame. Surely you can do better? Then again, it's entirely possible you can't, so I guess I should be more charitable.

Way to sugarcoat and paint in broad brushstrokes. Plenty of posters here apply for financial aid or aren’t rich. You sound bitter.

It isn’t lame. If you want to get nasty with parents because they want an optimal outcome for their child to thrive, you probably don’t care much for your own children (if you have any, some cat ladies post here, maybe you’re the “cool aunt” who drinks too much)

Yeah, I'm sure the parents from NYC posting on applying to TT elementary schools, hiring consultants, and acting like overall entitled D-bags are all financial aid recipients. Absolutely.

But much more hilariously, "Way to sugarcoat . . .?"

You are sugarcoating their reality. Living in the city is hard. Not everyone is rich. Go use the search bar for the NYC forum and type in financial aid. You’re gross and incurious. Glad you can’t send your children to school with ours.

So OP, what happened? You got into Spence and waitlisted at Brearley? Update us!

From another thread it actually sounds like her daughter got into Brearley and WL elsewhere (I am guessing Spence).

You sent a first choice letter and they rejected you?

Correct, told our PSD we would be high waitlist

The volume of sarcasm here makes me wonder whether there’s a professional or personal stake in defending the system as-is.

No. Just a poster who’s upset her loser kid couldn’t even get to the interview portion, let alone afford this at 68k a year

OP here:

We got in to Brearley and waitlisted at Chapin.

We are at the top of the waitlist at Chapin. But now thinking we may want to stick to Brearley.

I think you would be insane to drop Brearley for Chapin. Brearley is the gold standard and superb academically. For whatever reason, Chapin’s exmissions have slipped in recent yrs too, almost to 2T level.

We sent a FCL to Chapin over Brearley. We were leaning B for most of the process, but feel it is on a downward trajectory. We recognize B is widely considered to be academically "superior" but felt the downsides outweighed the upsides. We spoke to dozens of current families and recent alums across both schools and ultimately felt our DD would be happier at . This poster and the one saying "Brearley could fall a good long ways and still maintain primacy over Spence" sound bitter and almost paranoid about B slipping in status. Not to say that B isn't a great school and the right school for many families...it just shouldn't be completely inconceivable that a family might choose C or S (or any other school for that matter) over B.

Kids at C on our visits seemed much happier and more grounded than at B. Yours seems like a reasonable perspective to have. Also hoping for C here for a later grade. I think it's interesting that on the FB groups there are no B defenders after all the stuff the disgruntled parents are saying.

I’ve never been on a parents Facebook group, but I’m happy to defend Brearley. My daughter and we really like it. Like all schools there are things we don’t like, of course. Nothing is perfect. But I agree that there are just as many people who prefer the other girls schools or even the coed schools. They are all top notch and prepare the kids well for college and beyond.

Oh, and my daughter and her friends are very happy. It’s a pet peeve of mine when someone posts that during tours some group of kids seemed happier than others in the few minutes they observed them. That all seems pretty silly to me. And I have no idea what grounded even means in the context of a school visit or how one could even determine that from a tour.

OP here:

I could be insane but I am basing my decision on who my child is now an where I think they would do well. I do worry B will end up being too rigorous and cutthroat down the road. But at the same time, my kid is 5 and I have no idea what she will be like when she’s in MS and HS.

Anyone telling you you’re insane is insane. Do what’s best for your kid! My best friend who is incredibly talented / smart / pedigreed sends her child to a school considered to be second or even third tier when she had the option to go TT. Her child is thriving. I sent mine to a TT but only because it was the right one for her and don’t know if I would send her to any of the other TTs. Go with your gut and if you are truly unsure, ask your child’s head teacher for additional color on learning style (unless you’ve already had a PT conference in the last month or so).
