My kiddo’s composite seems safely in pool at 147, but two of the three individual scores are not in range. One score is very high and pulling the composite up. Thinking we should still parent refer, but wondered if anyone knew definitively which number to use.

There is no downside to referring. You should refer. I would think this score means automatic admission but who knows.

When you say automatic admission, do you mean to the pool or to AAP?

To the pool. There is no such thing as automatic AAP admission as it is a holistic process.

AP classes don’t start till high school.

The biggest advantage of AAP is a better peer group.

There is no pool anymore.

There still is a pool, or something equivalent set aside for kids with good scores to automatically get a chance without a referral.

yes, provide good work samples from home. And ready to appeal if needed.

Not all teachers are same…in case you think it’s not you can always appeal and ask.

Can people just stop with “make the cut for admission?” There is no “cut.” There are people with VERY good scores in VERY competitive districts who STILL don’t get in! Just watch… after the decisions come out in April there will 100s and 100s of posts on here about how shocked they are about not getting in with great scores and there is something wrong with the system etc. Happens every year! Just try and cross your fingers.

It’s like college admissions. It’s not just the numbers, it’s holistic and made by a committee that won’t tell you how they make picks.

The only thing we can say for sure is that it’s harder from schools with a more competitive talent pool.

My kid's scores are surprising too. Highest on nonverbal, which is traditionally a family weakness (96). 90% on verbal and 93 on quant. Composite score 128.

Why on earth are these baffling? 90s aren’t weakness. Someone is saying their kid is in the 50s and you come in saying “me too!” Is it just to make the other feel bad?

No, not at all. I'm just saying that historically my children's nonverbal scores are their lowest.

It seems that NGAT wasn't either designed or administered properly. Looking at the other posters' comments, it seems that the score discrepancy between categories is more than one should normally expect.

NP here. Also a composite of 128 isn't that good. My 3rd grade DC was rejected from full time AAP with that score on Cogat and NNAT. So, if you're hoping your child will get into AAP, it is s disappointing score.

You know what, it isn't. But my oldest got in with a score of 124 on the strength of his teacher's gushing recommendation and my referral, so I'm hoping the magic will work again.

Same, current AAP 3rd grader got a 124 Cogat and I thought that was the end for them but theyre in and thriving so far (Some 3s, mostly 4s on the report card). Don't envy this cohort with the NGAT, seems confusing but maybe you won't need 98++ percentiles this time around.
