The Virginia governor's debate is tonight!

This is a classic case of voting for a leader based on an issue designed to be highly emotional to capture people who are less conscientious and more like to vote on what they are afraid of rather than what they want to build.

This is how Cambridge Analytica propelled Ted Cruz and then Trump to power. They divide the voting population into 2200 different groups based on their personality traits. Then, they create messaging based on fear and emotion to get the groups to vote a certain way. You are a Liberty Focused Individualist. High in Openness, Low in Agreeableness - and do not even realize you are being manipulated.

You could have been a good parent and used this (totally real) situation to explain that your daughter is in absolutely no danger, but you are an awful person so you didn't.

“Conscientious Security-Oriented” or “Rule-Based Fairness” type. High Conscientious. Low Openness. High Threat sensibility and you believe in morals and fairness.

Are you worried there isn't enough for everyone? Do you think it's ok that Billionares control every aspect of your life? Do you think, if we raised taxes on the highest earners, our kids could get tuition assistance too?

Similar. DH and I are in N Arlington and will hold our noses to vote for Sears because of this and a few other issues. I think our neighbors are doing the same (all UMC professionals, 30s to 40s with younger kids) just based on some GOP coded language etc.

Feels a bit like Trump 2016 when there was a secret cohort of supporters not showing up in the polling. I still think Spanberger wins but I think it’s WAY closer than we know via polling.

She’s also got interestingly bad favorability ratings (no surprise after what we watched last night) so the only way she gains voters is by taking down Winsome which is why she’s running nonstop negatives. You rarely see a candidate who is truly up 10+ points running this many negatives nonstop for this long unless she can’t gain voters via her own likability AND the margins are a lot closer and she sees that in her own internal polling.

As I have always said for every debate, you’re not changing anybody’s mind who is a staunch Republican orDemocrat. But for the people in the middle, moments like this matter, and this was really bad. Towards the end, there’s a part where she kind of opens her mouth but then firmly closes her lips like she wants to say something that holds back. A very bad look.

This is correct. It also applies to Democrats. The current “Nazi” and “disappearing people” language being used by the party is the Democrat version of the playbook above. Last year, it was “threat to democracy.” This is why Biden was so confused when people wanted him to step down so a better candidate could run to save democracy - he thought everyone knew all that talk was simply campaign / GOTV verbiage.
