The more important question is why was this career criminal allowed to walk the streets?

He’s homeless and like many homeless people, likely has serious mental illness.

Rs love to say we need better mental health access in this country after mass shootings by white men. Well, the same applies here.

Republicans say it for all of the mentally ill, too. They also say, with good reason, that we need to bring back longterm institutional care for the severely mentally ill.

I don't know many dems who disagree with bringing back long term institutional care. It was Reagan that took it away. Not dems. It was supposed to be replaced with an updated system that never happened.

PP here. Reagan didn't do that alone.

Mecklenburg County (Charlotte) is strongly Blue. Those are the leaders who allowed this man to remain free after multiple arrests with cashless bail and a written promise to appear in court.

1) you can't actually tell what happened.

2) Everyone was aware he was dangerous or acting strange.

3) Based on the blood it wasn't clear whether he or she was injured

4) everyone there was in danger and needed to GTFO

Lessons: if you are injured make it clear to others that you need assistance/ help

Rip your clothing off if needed so people can stop the bleeding

I've BTDT on a train with a guy with a knife and people acted really stupid. Also there is no way for any of us to stop him even if it's a group. No one else was armed and if that guy is on PCPs he's stronger than all of us combined.

Disagree. There were big men on that train who could have grabbed the knife and tackled him to the ground. Again, he did not have a gun.

This is awful and makes me so angry.

People deserve to ride the train without being attacked by some loser criminal. Lock him up and throw away the key. F him.

I know you all don't want to talk about it, but just a reminder that the rest of America is. This is now a federal matter and a huge political flashpoint -- the fatigue is real.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-15081607/Iryna-Zarutska-Ukranian-stabbing-Decarlos-Brown-new-video-train-North-Carolina.html

Have you watched the video and did it make you sick to your stomach? Did you also experience the sinking realization of how this moment will be a pivot point in the political landscape? This crime has major political implications.

Federal charges have been filed under 18 USC 1992. Violent criminals on mass transit systems are about to "find out" as the kids say. (https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-charges-light-rail-attacker-federal-crime)

Federal transportation funds are at risk for crime-ridden (Blue) cities for "allowing violent assailants to terrorize our public transit systems." More to come. (https://www.transit.dot.gov/about/news/us-transportation-secretary-sean-p-duffy-calls-out-soft-crime-leaders-charlotte-launches)

The Assistant U.S. Attorney General for Civil Rights has publicly stated, in writing: "This is a civil rights issue"

More finding out to follow.

Wouldn't it be nice if some ultra-billionaire like Elon Musk would donate a measly million bucks to the family of Iryna Z.

_+1 Will definitely be a huge political flashpoint; and when I made a similar statement upthread, I was accused of being MAGA.

You watch too many movies.

The most upsetting and shocking piece of this whole ordeal is that nobody rushed to help her and stop the bleeding!

His own mother wanted him locked up years ago!

Public transportation is not safe anymore.

You can't protect yourself from death. Millions od people ride public transportation and nothing happens. Live your life. We are all going to die

It’s easy to watch the video, which you know is of a stabbing, and be confused about why people didn’t spring into whatever action you think was appropriate. Especially if you’re already arriving at the story on your authoritarian crusade parade.

For the people in the moment, I think it was probably a LOT more confusing and I don’t think they acted with indifference. They were normal people in a totally unexpected, very weird situation and I doubt anyone on the train knew what had happened right away.

You are wrong about Kitty Genovese. Watch tge docunentary on her life by her younger brother. She did not die alone
