I'm a fire-loving liberal. Why? Because a lil home fire emits a few kg of CO2. A single freighter ship, the ones that bring you all that consumer garbage, emits tons of CO2 per hour. Literal tons. Think on that for a minute.

One hour's operation of one ship emits (according to google) 16-30 tons per hour.
1 ton = 907 kg.
1 ship, 1 hour = (low estimate) 14,512 kg of CO2. And there are thousands of cargo ships in operation at every minute of every day.

You understand so little, and overreact so wildly to some no-context info. And you are quick to fling insults around. Sounds kinda maga, tbh.

All the people saying it’s fine because science and comparative CO2 emissions are ignoring the part about how unhealthy it is to inhale particulates. You know, the particulate matter readings that show up in the Apple weather app when it’s worse than normal, like from forest fires…

No one will say that burning wood in neighborhoods releases more PM into the air than forest fires, but we don’t want to inhale forest fire air, and inhaling smoke from burning wood in neighborhoods (a completely voluntary, avoidable activity that benefits no one except the burners and their vibes) is just a lesser version of that. We get it, people who burn wood don’t care. This is a vent for those who do care about inhaling smoke PM and don’t burn wood for fun/vibes/nostalgia/cozy feelings.

More accurate to say that we have intelligently assessed the matter and determined that our contribution to air pollution can be reduced much more effectively— like orders of magnitude more— by making any one of several lifestyle choices, such as not ordering “cute” disposable clothes and decorations from china, or living in a walkable neighborhood.

I knew someone(s) would say other things cause more harm so this is of lesser magnitude and that’s what mattters. The point is that this is a completely optional leisure activity that literally only benefits the wood burners with only negative effects to others (and themselves but whatever). It’s great to try and reduce pollution in all the other ways. It’s not an either/or.

Cars are needed to get places, work, etc. in a timely manner anywhere that’s not a dense urban area with good public transport — a handful of cities in this country. Not that it matters for the purposes of this post, but I drive an electric car less than 10m a day on weekdays and not much more on weekends and I don’t buy fast fashion or disposable goods or plastic stuff and avoid takeout and am not telling people to do any of those things, but this post is about burning wood.

If you want to tell yourself that your contribution to reducing air pollution by avoiding fast fashion, etc. justifies you burning wood, and what does it matter anyway when factories and other countries pollute way more and there’s nothing we can do about that, that’s fine and probably a common mental justification people use. That doesn’t mean it’s not an self-indulgence with harmful effects to burn wood, especially when it’s not needed for heat and it forces everyone around to inhale the smoke (not like a cabin in the woods with no central heating), especially when it’s 75 degrees.

The vast majority of things people do are avoidable, just for fun, and have externalities. Discussed in depth above. Vacation travel, buying plastic crap, deliveries, fast fashion, turning your AC down lower than needed.
