Changes in LACs

Is Worcester a pull? Haven't heard the best things.

I grew up nearby and it was a dump. It was a milltown (city actually, one of the largest in MA outside Boston) but mills all closed. Now it's connected to Boston via commuter rail, there's been a lot of gentrification with a restaurant/bar scene and a popular minor league baseball team plus UMass medical. There is a decent-sized college-aged population in and around the city (WPI, Clark, Assumption, Worcester State plus HC.) I've got a kid at one of the Maine LACs and I drive by HC on the way and wonder when it is going to really take off again. For my kid's Bethesda HS, the stats in Naviance for admission were sky high.

are the schools I see on the rise right now. Wesleyan has invested a ton into new campus resources that go understated on DCUM. Vassar's rank has shot up, and it has improved its financial aid. Haverford will hopefully reel in since its days when its rigor was seen as on the level or even harder than Swarthmore.

I don't get saying these amazing schools are "on the rise." They are already "there."

Also, Hamilton is becoming the new Amherst.

Midd is in Vermont and none of those schools are “rising” any different than years prior, other than maybe Colby.

Hamilton is completely different than Amherst and wants its future to be in tech and AI.

Also, can any of the NESCACs really be described as “on the rise?” Are any of them lacking in respect? Top to bottom, they are the standard on which all other SLACs are judged/compared. Obviously not saying those are the “best” schools, but people take shots at Amherst, Williams, Wes, Hamilton, Mid, Colby, etc. on this board for a reason. I don’t see many Bowdoin people, for example, puffing their chests about how they’re better than W&L.

I wouldn't say the NESCAC are the standard at all... WASP are. I can see an argument to include Wellesley or Harvey Mudd, but Wesleyan? Hardly even discussed on this forum, same with Hamilton. Middlebury is often talked about with the context of it falling from a top 4 lac and Colby...meh.

OMG. This is a very typical DCUM response in that it acknowledges the existence of only 4 liberal arts colleges. My point is that the NEACACs are the standards at their relative tiers. They are the known names. Even poor Trin and Conn College who are only pariahs in the context of this hyper elitist, striver obsessed, Ivy Plus or nothing board. The point remains that they are known brands and frequent comparators to lesser known lacs in vibe or experience if not “prestige.” And all that said, I’m sorry to break it to you, but you can get an elite education at Wes, Hamilton, Midd, etc. Those schools are far more similar to Amherst and Williams than they are different.

This is a lot of words to say “I can’t handle that some liberal arts colleges are better than my personal favorite.”

One of the WASPs IS my personal favorite! Or at least one of them. Which is why I can confidently say the sun does not rise and set in the Pioneer Valley. Love to discuss the profiles of the SLACs, far down the US News top 100 than most people on this board would care for. But if you come at me with the anointed 4 or nothing, you’re a clown and your opinion means nothing.

Yeesh, Amherst is a $hithole, but glad someone out there likes it.

Why the hate for Amherst? I've seen it on this board over and over, and I don't get it. I'm wondering if it's all the same person. It seems obsessive. So you don't like the school, okay, why post about that incessantly?

And no I have no affiliation with Amherst. But I do have a kid at another school in the Pioneer Valley, and I've been on the campus a few times. Looks lovely to me.

1) you aren’t from Worcester
2) thank you for reminding us why we would beat up you kids from Worcester burbs
3) Waterville and Lewiston are actually dumps (Brunswick isn’t, but you would have specigfically mentioned Bowdoin otherwise). Enjoy!

Wesleyan was always the little three with Williams and Amherst. It’s like you’re just learning about colleges. These rankings are stupid. Most LAC are similar in terms of good education.

What a bunch of New England garbage. NESCAC is the standard for mediocrity.

OK, thanks for your input Dennison mom.

Williams mom, but thanks for showing you can't handle an opinion that isn't your own.

Ha ha. OK, sis. Weird flex to say that the NESCACs are the standard for mediocrity and then proudly claim a kid at Williams, what plenty on this board would happily call the quintessential NESCAC. Seems like your convictions weren’t strong enough to insist your kid go to Carleton or Pomona. Or maybe you’re just s-posting and got lost.

Or maybe im smart enough to understand that there's a real delta between Williams and Connecticut college for Christ's sakes. Most of the Nescac is mediocre; there's the best of the best (Bowdoin, Amherst, Williams) and then there's the rest...It's a sports league, not all of us are obsessed.

Wesleyan has been on a significant downturn and has fallen massively behind Williams or Amherst.

Massively is an overstatement, still a highly selective school.

Ugh. I think “massively behind” is a bit of an overstatement, unless you’re a Mammoth, Eph, or WASP or nothing person.

Eph who thinks highly of Wesleyan. @Massively behind” is just untrue. Wesleyan is a great school and offers a different vibe from Williams/Amherst. has always been the beloved artsy part of the Little Three trio.

Well if you think I was suggesting that Williams and Con Coll are the same, maybe you’re just not smart enough to understand my original point. And if you really believe most of the NESCAC is mediocre (crazy work BTW) then you probably aren’t. You got to make sure everyone understood their place, though, which is a very DCUM thing to do. You can see yourself out with the WASP or nothing strivers. You know who you are and I’m getting those vibes from you.

Triggered much? It’s a fact that Williams has a better endowment, more resources, better career and fellowship and graduate school outcomes than Connecticut college and every other NESCAC school. Pretending they’re all the same because they all play lacrosse together is just denying the inevitable truth that Williams Amherst and Bowdoin lead the pack.

Most of the NESCAC is mediocre and a few like Wesleyan and Midd are on a decline compared to where they were less than a decade ago. Williams and Amherst are in the company of Harvard and Yale; meanwhile, no person in their right mind would choose Connecticut college over the worst ivy. Get real and out of your emotions.

Please. It’s just a sports league based off a baseball rivalry. Stop thinking this means anything about academic or career quality.
