As an aside, it is great to see young people deciding not to go to college and learning a trade instead - auto mechanic, plumbing, carpentry, welding......all jobs that pay well and will be around for some time to come.

Great jobs until no one can pay them.

If we’re ever in a situation where college educated white collar people can’t pay a plumber to fix a toilet, then the country is about to collapse.

I believe this more than AI actually doing someone's job. Companies are laying off right now because Musk demonstrated you can fire hundreds of thousands of people with zero consequences and then hire a fraction back at far less pay and no benefits.

Musk destroyed the company doing that. The only reason he succeeded is because Twitter is his propaganda machine, not a self-sustainingvbusiness.

Company performance doesn't matter. The CEOs are so rich they can run an unprofitable company for decades.

Right, and all the people who are like "I've interacted with AI and its' terrible, it'll never replace human workers!" are kidding themselves... Verizon and Anthem COULD provide you with customer service that immediately answered the phone and was empowered to solve your problem—but that costs money. They've figured out the minimum level of customer service necessary to keep you just above the level where you want out... they'd be happy to get AI customer service who offer shitty non-responsive service for a fraction of the cost of having a real person.

There is a very low bar for a lot of customer service—AI doesnt' have to be better, just not enough worse it makes people cancel.

training programs to find new jobs for all the people who are about to get fired... communicating to the white collar workers—lawyers, architects, etc—that they're in danger...

traditionally there have been rules in place preventing mass layoffs without warning and funds and programs in place to retrain workers who are put out of work en masse....
