Duke [Full Scholarship] vs MIT [$77k/year]

You can only think of two. Thanks for proving my point about the lack of top ten departments. Academically, Duke is overrated. It is also not in MIT’s league for CS. The value is there for the money, but the worship of Duke here at DCUM is off the charts.

Wow. You are really angry. What is your beef with Duke? Were you rejected? Or your kid? Or are you a Tar Heel?

As I noted, Duke is really good at accepting kids with great people skills and developing these skills. I think you would have benefitted from this. College is about more than just academic rankings. Which tend to be quite arbitrary, by the way.

Your very limited perspective and childish hatred towards a school is quite pathetic.

No it is not. Duke is not "good at accepting kids with great people skills" that is absurd.

Duke is not even in the same realm as MIT in CS.

Duke has always been racist.

Wow. The force in the anti-Duke contingent is strong (or weak, depending on your perspective). The total hatred of a school is odd and scary.

One can make a compelling argument for either school. A totally one-sided argument in favor of either option shows a complete lack of intellect and critical thinking skills.

But that is the world today. Everything is black and white. No nuance. The dumbing down of America.

I'm guessing most of those with the strongest opinions didn't go to a school remotely similar to either Duke or MIT. Yet they are self-proclaimed experts.

I went to one of the schools but could make a good argument for either. This is not top tier school vs. SE Idaho Community College. It is two great schools.

I'm sorry the OP is being subjected to this stupidity. Congratulations to their child and best of luck to them with this choice.

Duke is far better appeal than one dimensional MIT. Well rounded people at Duke.

My best friend who went to Duke whose entire family went to HBCU's would argue otherwise. But you be you.

And I know for a fact that Goldman and Bain (among others) love Duke alums because of their people skills (while also being super smart). Not saying that this doesn't exist at other schools. Unlike you, I'm not dumb enough to make generalizations like that. But on the average, Duke alums are better.

The school with the full scholarship hands down. Even for students at the best schools the future of good jobs is uncertain.

Your kids should know who he is.

Urban Cambridge/Boston vs sleepy Durham

Duke is nicer if you're white.

MIT is for people who want to go into research labs or invent new tech and start businesses and get investors. Duke is for getting a tech job.

Be honest with yourself (we don't know your kid) -- is he invited to MIT because he's really the national/world tippy top tier in smarts and tech passion and creativity and motivation and ambition, or did he slide in?

Duke CS = $201,846

https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school?166683-Massachusetts-Institute-of-Technology&fos_code=1107&fos_credential=3

MIT CS = $220,064

Winner would be Duke +$300K

You'd be dumb to decline to invest $310K for $20K/yr early career return and more afterward.

Also, is OP actually comparing apples to apples?
Is Duke really free (tuition + board + fees + expenses), or are there costs that were roled into MIT's $77K.

Does your kid have friends across the country who are going to MIT?

Sure, if you want to grow up to be a thief and a con artist at Goldman or Bain, those people skills at Duke are great

I'm OP. He wants Computer Science. MIT's legendary CS program is really, really hard to turn down. But Duke is free...

Duke's CS program is really very good. He would not be a weaker job or career candidate if he went to Duke. Save the money so he can get an MSCS after undergrad.

MIT bachelors is better than MSCS. PhD is free and easier to get int from MIT undergrad.

Last paragraph is helpful.

Durham is not "sleepy." It definitely is not Boston. No argument. But it has its relative pros. But most importantly, it is different from Boston. For some that is a pro. For some, that is a con. "Sleepy" is lame.

Duke isn't racist. Not sure where you get this from.

Lots of MIT alums end up on Wall Street. Or in industry. As do many Duke alums. The generalizations are weak.

Both are great schools. Both will open tons of doors across a lot of areas. Different kids will be happy at different places. The large difference in cost for OP matters more to some than others.

Parents are already rich enough to fill pay MIT. They can afford grad school and down payment

Wow. Low class loser. No holiday card for you from David Rubenstein (Duke alum and one of the great Americans out there).
