Nobody turns MIT down for Duke.

Wanna bet?

Sure do. Last year, only 133 MIT students who were admitted chose not to attend. There were none that turned MIT down for Duke.

There are many who would likely have gotten in who choose not to apply because they are two extremely different schools. I went to Duke 25 years ago. Given my stats and knowing my classmates who got into MIT, I am fairly sure I would have gotten into MIT then. But I didn't want to study math/science/engineering and I wanted to enjoy my four years of college. And I knew plenty of others at Duke like me.

Ok well OP's kid wants to study CS. Also 25 years ago many people did not want to study CS because they wanted to party and not be a nerd or uncool.

It's about $2 million in 40 years adjusted for inflation. So they can take risks and not worry about being destitute in retirement.

I know plenty of MIT grads who are engineers making 90k after graduation. Which is about what other engineers make.

I get that if it's CS it may be different, but as an engineer - I say Duke was the correct answer here. Duke engineering is great. You'll end up in exactly the same place a couple years after graduation.

AB Duke - Super special kids. Tons of perks. Fabulous cohort experience. Cross-admit with MIT does not surprise me.

Duke.

MIT is a great school, but unless you're quite wealthy you are talking a significant amount of debt, particularly factoring in interest. I have a friend who did her PhD at MIT coming from a state school, so it's not like there aren't later options as well.

Responses are pretty split
Does this help you, OP? Serous question.

Impressive. Think I know of only two. Have no idea of their salary.

Duke. For a totally different experience with less grind and die hard competition.

OP - If your DC was offered the AB Duke scholarship, know that’s an elite alumni network within the larger Duke network.

AB Duke will open doors your DC doesn’t even know about yet. There’s something to be said for being one of the biggest fish in the pool (and no one would say the Duke pool is small …. )

Unless you think Duke would be a miserable social environment for your kid, I would take the money and all the perks that come with it.

Duke is multi-dimensional, MIT is not. Easy decision Blue Devils!

MIT grad here, Duke for sure. Also he shouldn't major in only computer science. Take business or other classes. AI is quickly removing entry level compsci positions.
