MIT is (MIT grad here) but I think financially Duke is the better decision.

OP originally posted in April, and while they have not been back to update the thread on their decision, it is likely that they enrolled at MIT or Duke a month ago. None of the recent posts are helping OP.

Maybe OP will notice the thread and give us an update.

FWIW, my nephew graduated from MIT a year ago and has a very good, 120k job. which is what he'd have gotten out of duke.

That's very low, my DS made 145k from BR out of Emory.

What is "BR" ? TIA

I get that if it's CS it may be different, but as an engineer - I say Duke was the correct answer here. Duke engineering is great. You'll end up in exactly the same place a couple years after graduation.

Impressive. Think I know of only two. Have no idea of their salary.

so it sounds like you're not in a hiring capacity in this area.

Not OP, but was in similar situation. DC was accepted to both schools and invited to apply for A.B. Duke scholarship. DC chose MIT, largely based on meeting the other admitted students at CPW event. Right choice for DC, others may have chosen differently.

As an MIT Course 6 grad, I would say you'd be nuts not to pick Duke.
Go to MIT for grad school and MIT (and get paid to go by being an RA or TA)

It's really a no brainer

OP picked a school already.

MIT. Obviously you can afford $77k, which in today's world, is really only the price of a regular truck.

MIT is much more prestigious.

Yours seems like a different situation, since your child as invited to apply for the full ride but chose not to, so similar costs made MIT the better choice. Whereas OP's kid actually got the full ride and was deciding between almost full sticker price at MIT versus a full ride at Duke.

This. He also might have an easier time getting top grades at Duke, based on the fact that he got a merit scholarship.

In addition, if he’s straight, his dating life will be better at Duke.

Sure, the situations are not completely alike. We feel reasonably confident that DC would have been a strong contender for the Duke scholarship, but DC didn't feel it was ethical to apply unless they were sure they'd attend Duke. This is no shade on Duke, which is a great school. DC is interested in pure science (not finance or such), so MIT was the right choice.

The merit scholars at Duke end up being the school's Rhodes, Truman, and Marshall scholars, among other pretty strong post-graduate accomplishments. So glad to know your child is a shoe in for the Rhodes.

Hi. I am OP. I just stumbled across this post again. I talked with my kid, and we took the full ride at Duke. We are going to save the money and then give it to him upon graduation as a gift.
