They’re not joking about a third term for Trump

There is a constitutional amendment. ANY talk of this is dictatorial.

First paragraph:
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility of seeking a third term in the White House, which is prohibited by the Constitution under the 22nd Amendment, saying in an exclusive interview with NBC News that there were methods for doing so and clarifying that he was “not joking.”

And Trump said there are ways.

Sounds like accurate reporting of the news.

The "ways,' are ludicrous. Vance is elected president and Trump is his VP. immediately after being sworn in as president Vance immediately resigns and trump is president. Or, even more ludicrous is trump is elected Speaker of the House and GOP elected president and VP immediately resign and trump is president.

Sounds like treasonous fraud against the American people.

Why would Vance or anyone else elected agree to that? Wouldn't he/they want to be president themselves?

Promises of money is the most likely thing.

I really want to see them both asked about this in a joint interview.

But as Trump has repeatedly demonstrated, questions of the law and the Constitution ultimately reduce to power struggles. If you hear somebody say Trump is not allowed to do something, the first question to ask is What’s the enforcement mechanism? The courts may be likely to rule against permitting him to run as either president or vice president. But such cases are unlikely to be decided until after the Republican convention has locked in the party’s choice, forcing the courts to choose between effectively canceling the presidential election and enforcing the Twenty-Second Amendment.

Would five justices on the Supreme Court have the guts? Would the states follow such a ruling in a white-hot atmosphere where Republicans would accuse the judicial branch of nullifying democracy? Every apparently solid assumption about the inviolability of the two-term limit gets porous upon close inspection.

These are good points. Where/how/when does Trump get blocked from running again? Will Secretaries of State refuse to put him on the ballot? Will the courts force every state to take him off? During the primaries? After the convention?

Also who has standing to bring a suit? That was the emoluments clause problem IIRC.

This is how Putin governed for years, right? With complicit Medvedev.

It's sad and pathetic how many MAGA supporters believe that this is how Trump will get a 3rd term. Most don't believe the "rules" can be changed so he can run again but they do believe someone else will run for President with him on the ticket as VP and then step down immediately after inauguration so Trump can take over.

He doesn't have to step down. Turmp can be vp in name only, president in reality.

He's not President in reality right now, so what changes in four years in that scenario? He's just going to be older with an even more addled brain.

Anonymous wrote:What brazen hypocrisy. It was Republicans who created term limits in the first place because of FDR, and now they’re whining about how unfair it is.

I almost wish he’d won in 2020, because he’d be out of our hair now. The 4 year hiatus gave them time to regroup, remove all the moderate Republican guardrails, and form an unholy alliance with Silicon Valley.

+1
Completely agree. In retrospect would have been far better.

You are so gullible. This is Trump getting ahead of being a lame-duck; with some flooding the zone to create chaotic news cycles. There is no way he serves a third term.

He pulled it from “where the sun don’t shine”. Complete fantasy.

He’s half dead now. Can we stop electing geezers? If he’s still alive in 3 years, we can fret about this.
