egg prices are out of control..local govt needs to reduce urban chicken coop restrictions

CDC wants hospitals to test influenza patients for bird flu.
If it takes off (sad pun) I suspect municipalities will euthanize backyard flocks.
Get your picky eater kids to get protein from something besides eggs, hon.

Costco in Wheaton and the Safeway in Kensington had ZERO eggs as of 8pm last evening (Tuesday)

You mean right after the big snow freak out back to school shopping?

Do some math, kitten. The snow was 10 days ago. This was last night.
they said last Tuesday. Everyone did the bulk of the pre storm shopping prior to that. Some places might not have gotten deliveries.

Mwrarh

No, *I* said “Tuesday night”. As in last night. Not a week ago. Yesterday. The 14th.

As another poster said - you CAN acknowledge there’s an egg shortage right now without it making you a trump supporter. You don’t have to keep carrying the torch for Joe.

Because right now you look like a complete moron trying to convince the crowd how awesome the Emperor’s New Clothes look, when we can all plainly see his wedding tackle hanging down.

Wow. You are really on fire. I have no idea if there is an egg shortage all the way in outer MD where you live. There is not one here. So it’s spotty stock I guess?

Anywhoooo prices are up maybe a dollar. That happens over time.

Kensington is “outer Maryland”?!?!

JFC, what a moron

Sorry babe. Burbs.

This is concerning, I live in that area. Good thing i bought 11 dozen from HT this past weekend for 1.99 each (others mentioned it earlier in the thread). Don’t hate the egg lover.

More crime will be egg prices down too!

It’s true, we should have light chicken density instead of putting them all in one place. If all of your neighbors had a few chickens it would be a lot better than keeping them on a farm with the economies of scale, specialty equipment, feed storage, and transportation. I’m sure that they will just ride the bus.

I don't see a problem with backyard chickens as long as you don't allow roosters. The smell isn't too bad in most cases. The biggest problem is that the local foxes and raccoons will be very excited by this development. When I was younger, we raised chickens on the family farm. My job was to open and close the henhouse and collect the eggs. The rooster did not like my daily theft.

I mean the whole "let's have everyone farm chickens instead of having large farms" idea doesn't work. Economies of scale matter.

Someone did actually try this once in the Great Leap Forward. It resulted in famine.

No China's Great Famine was not caused by backyard chickens. Like most famines, it was a distribution problem.

= Communist Problem

And there we go…a handful of folks doing this and the sky falls.

DH went to Costco in Gaithersburg in late afternoon yesterday. ZERO eggs, too. In addition, organic strawberries cost $16~ and non-organic strawberries cost close to $10 that was used to be price of organic strawberries not long ago.....

Do people on DCUM not know how to shop or price comparison...or is Bethesda just an embarrassment of affordable groceries all around?

I don't know how many pounds of strawberries you are getting for your $16...but you can get a pound of strawberries at Amazon Fresh for $2.99 ($3.99 organic). Raspberries are $6.29 for two containers (I think that's 16 ounces). Amazon offers $10 off $50 coupons ALL THE TIME.

Instacart sends $40 off $80 or $50 off $100 coupons ALL THE TIME. That's where you could order Harris Teeter eggs for $1.99/dozen (as many as you want...ordered 3). BTW...it's also a backdoor way to order from Costco without becoming a member. Some of the Instacart prices are higher, but most are the same.

You pay for Instacart delivery fees and what not, but it still usually works out to a 33% - 40% discount.

I’m pro level shopper. The Instacart coupons mentioned above is Not true at all. Only way to get those regularly is creating hundreds of accounts and waiting patiently. Only a small percentage of accounts will yield those coupons.

The amazon fresh deals are real.

I'll pay 2x the current price of eggs to make sure my neighbor doesn't have a chicken coop.

People have the right to farm and feed their family

not according to your local government!

no one is stopping you from moving 30 miles west or east to your own little farm.

Almost every local jurisdiction allows poultry as pets

You will need a permit. Unless you have more than two acres. If you have more than two acres, you already sold to a developer.

Not where I live. Farming in residential zones is allowed on all agricultural and single-family zoned properties. Urban Farming is allowed in the residential zones for townhomes and multifamily communities as well other non-residential zones.

Where do you live?

People's Republic of Fairfax County.

You mean the reasonable side of the Potomac that actually attempts to protect public health and the environment.

No. I mean the busybodies who worry about the color of the bike shed next to the nuclear reactor.

I think it's funny that the posters who apparently hate everything about the area also hate backyard chickens. Not surprising, but funny.

Yes, let’s eliminate zoning and give our neighbors the bird flu. https://www.wric.com/news/virginia-news/positive-bird-flu-case-in-accomack-county/amp/

There are tons of places with roosters all over and everybody sleeps fine. Even fancy places like Saint Barths.

Recognizing that there is an egg shortage and the egg prices are high won’t make you Maga or Republican or conservative. It’s OK to accept the truth.

Biden made them high, they come down on Jan 20

In the age of a deadly bird flu? No thanks.

I've had no issue buying eggs.

Chickens belong on farms. Not urban backyards.

But what about the egg children?

I have two instacart accounts and get these coupons once per month.

No idea on the algorithm that feeds them to me…but I am always waiting for them to stop but they never do.

It’s also the only time I use instacart. Again, no idea why I am the lucky recipient.

There's 1.99 eggs like really bad ones from unhealthy chickens and there's $10.99 farm fresh cage free organic good ones. Hell it's $12.99 at some places. I want something between the 2 and really you can't get that for less than $4.99 anywhere these days. But $4.99 is usually not pasture raised and cage free but just cage free. Usually I'm picking up the $6.99 ones from Moms. I want them from healthy chickens but I don't need them to be perfect eggs Trader Joe's sells out daily by 1p they told me.
