Gen Xers - Do you find Taylor Swift’s music bland?

I was just bemoaning how little of todays music is danceable — the kids don’t dance like we did and I think it’s because most of the music doesn’t have that get up and move groove to it like we had in the 80s. I have several Taylor songs on my get up and move playlist which is otherwise heavily 80s.

What is danceable from her latest album? It’s all very slow, melancholy, navel gazing stuff.

Gen X swiftie here. I agree the latest isn't super danceable but it is incredible.

I just can’t see it that way. She forgot to add in melodies. That is a big oops in an music album for me.

So much of it is marketing. A lot of the most amazing and talented artists are never even played on the radio.

I enjoy Lana’s schtick, but even her lower key success is all marketing. She’s not very talented. Watch her infamous SNL performance.

Is this basically a generational thing? Is she popular among Millenials because they grew up hearing about her life and romances and just took more of an interest in what she had to say in her supposed “genius” song lyrics? I honestly don’t even know if her lyrics even are that great because I find the melodies and her voice so boring I don’t even care to put that much thought into what she’s saying

And yes, I realize she has gotten better in recent years. I actually do like Folklore, but she was insanely popular for practically two decades prior, so I don’t think it really counts.

Nope. Love her and her music. Like all artists there are clunkers here and there but the last four albums to me have been winners.

I wasn't talking about her specifically, but I think some of her songs are truly beautiful, like Sweet Carolina and Paris, Texas. Can't judge performance as I just listen.

Yeah that was a weird comparison. I do like Lana's voice (when it's produced) but don't think she's very talented. Definitely a product of money and marketing.

This is such a GenX post. This is exactly the same as saying, "I don't listen to mainstream music" in high school.

Her music is the least danceable pop out there.

And I wonder if this either consciously or unconsciously because she can’t dance, so it wouldn’t tour as well if she had lots of dance songs.

I HATE IT!

I'm a woman. I don't mind her, but I literally cannot stand her music. It baffles me how many grown-*ss women think it's good.

I feel like women used to be so much more bad *ss. Like Alanis Morrissette, Fiona Apple (song Criminal!!) even Tori Amos. Gwen when she was in No Doubt. Courtney Love in Garabage. Then--the Missy Elliotts....

the hip-hop/rapper women have just gotten so exponentially disgusting--constantly talking about their v-jays and wetness or just 'talking through songs' sounding like idiots and exactly the same in every single song like Missy Elliott.

Bring back some variety in music. Even the men today sound whiny as all get-out. Give me some 90s grunge or even some new wave.

Bland, bland, bland.

^ I'm an old GenX (born 1970) went through the great 70s music, 80s new hip-hop, new wave and 90s grunge/alternative...today is just nothing.

My 18-year old son is listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers and a lot of the same music I liked back in the early 90s in college.

And that’s awesome but it’s sad that kids have to go back to that to find good music.
