Gen Xers - Do you find Taylor Swift’s music bland?

I'm a woman. I don't mind her, but I literally cannot stand her music. It baffles me how many grown-*ss women think it's good.

I feel like women used to be so much more bad *ss. Like Alanis Morrissette, Fiona Apple (song Criminal!!) even Tori Amos. Gwen when she was in No Doubt. Courtney Love in Garabage. Then--the Missy Elliotts....

the hip-hop/rapper women have just gotten so exponentially disgusting--constantly talking about their v-jays and wetness or just 'talking through songs' sounding like idiots and exactly the same in every single song like Missy Elliott.

Bring back some variety in music. Even the men today sound whiny as all get-out. Give me some 90s grunge or even some new wave.

Bland, bland, bland.

Also love all of these ladies, especially Hole. That was Courtney's band, not Garbage. Loved Garbage too!

Also adore Taylor and her music. She is pretty badass in her own way and her music has lots of variety.

^ I'm an old GenX (born 1970) went through the great 70s music, 80s new hip-hop, new wave and 90s grunge/alternative...today is just nothing.

My 18-year old son is listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers and a lot of the same music I liked back in the early 90s in college.

And that’s awesome but it’s sad that kids have to go back to that to find good music.

+1 I was shocked that my HS Kid's guitar concert was all stuff that I grew up listening to.

Her music is for tween girls. DD started liking Taylor Swift and Katy Perry in ES and moved on from them by age 12.

She does A+++ PR which is what it really takes to reach this level of celebrity. There are much more talented musicians who you'll never hear of because they don't have the PR. Same with actors.

That stunt with the football hero (Kelce) asking her out in front of the whole world and her bringing her fans into the decision and first date and new relationship drama was soooo cringey at her age. She acted like she was 14. I was so embarrassed for her. But her tween fan base is fantasizing about dating one day and they loved it. It turned out to be a brilliant PR move.

Oh please, it’s not sad. Tons of kids in the 90s listened almost exclusively to classic rock from the 70s.

Spotify and the internet make it so convenient for kids to find music from all decades. It’s a great thing. And there’s lots of good new music out there. My teenager has turned me on to lots of good bands, but her playlists are peppered with music from the 80s and 90s, too.

I like some of Taylor Swift’s more recent music, but I don’t actively choose it when looking for music to listen to. I tend to choose music from the 80s and 90s which is what I grew up with (and which is far better than 95% of the new music today), but I can still appreciate her music in its own way.

I don’t like her lyrics, and that’s pretty much all that’s going for her.

That's because his teacher is probably your age.

It is bland. That's one reason why she's been so successful. I, a middle-aged mom with a desk job, can listen to it while I work and it won't distract me or get me emotionally invested. But my teen can get fully emotionally invested. She's kind of a genius ... but bland!
