Gen Xers - Do you find Taylor Swift’s music bland?

I think she abandoned Gen X after the red album.

She was never with Gen X.

The songs were lyrics like we are never ever ever getting back together repeated multiple times. Another was about driving a maserati, another was how a boy was trouble. When I hear people talk about how they think she is a lyrical genius….they need to get out and listen to more musicians. There was nothing genius about the songs I heard and I heard a whole album many times over! It is pretty much pop music. Didn’t stand out to me at all.

But…there is basically never anything memorable to her songs except her voice and lyrics (not true about Carly Simon). And she’s a million times more successful, so it comes across as being inherently overrated. She deserves the radio-play frequency of a Carly Simon, but instead she’s “a monster on the hill…slowly lurching toward your favorite city.”

Her voice is her biggest downfall. It’s not bad, it’s just totally uninteresting.

I agree, but you have to placate the Swifties in real life-so I say something about the lyrics or how the production of her shows must be amazing so I can move on and keep my job. It usually works

Mostly yes. She has two or three songs I like ok but she “bland” is a good descriptor.

Her following are more cult like. The kids just think it is super cool to like Taylor Swift. Its peer pressure and expectation, not musical talent that is bringing them out. A lot of her music isn't even very kid friendly but they sing along anyways. I guess some musicians in every generation have had that tween / teen / groupie frenzy momentum.

It’s this. My tween thinks she supposed to like it the way she thinks she needs Lululemon and sephora. She hasn’t had any broken hearts so I don’t think she particularly identifies with the music, she’s following a trend.

So much of it is marketing. A lot of the most amazing and talented artists are never even played on the radio.

Like I said- you always have to be careful stating your opinion around Swifties.

“Yes ma’am her lyrics are good- uh huh and I’m sure her show is amazon- so cool.👍 “

Ha- I meant amazing but autocorrect made it amazon. Kinda perfect in its mass marketing way.

Gen X and I really like her. Obviously it’s pop music but I think her lyrics are really clever and her music is danceable. I was just bemoaning how little of todays music is danceable — the kids don’t dance like we did and I think it’s because most of the music doesn’t have that get up and move groove to it like we had in the 80s. I have several Taylor songs on my get up and move playlist which is otherwise heavily 80s.

My sister is a musicology professor. The only reason they’re holding those classes is to entice kids to sign up and to make sure the university doesn’t cut funding to the music departments.

They don’t actually think her music is any good and they all resent having to pander to kids this way.

"If you're horrible to me I'm going to write a song about you and you are not going to like it. That's how I operate," Swift told the Mail On Sunday in 2009.

I find every single thing about her to be boring and I cannot for the life of me pinpoint why it annoys me. Her music is dull, her lyrics are boring crap I would’ve written in my journal between the ages of 17-22, her stage presence is lifeless, she doesn’t strike me as a person who would ever have an original idea or feeling. I am bored just thinking about her.
