American Katie Grimes places much lower.

Covid is starting to do the rounds of the swimming pool. I don't know about US swimmers, but Adam Peaty is down as well as an Australian 1500m swimmer who had to withdraw. Teams are resorting to masking again.

Grimes also had the 400 IM yesterday, which is a brutal event. That probably sapped some of her energy for today. She is also scheduled to swim the 10k open water event! Nothing if not versatile.

Sad for Lani Pallister (the AUS swimmer for the 1500 who had to withdraw). Hopefully the COVID stays at bay and doesn’t widely affect anyone else.

Two American swimmers positive now and have been moved to a hotel. If I'd spent my whole life training for the Olympics, I'd be staying in a rental not in a sports dorm.

They didn’t say what Jade Carey was sick with, or at least not that I heard, but I kept cringing when all the gymnasts would hug her again and again and again. I know they’re excited, but don’t catch the bug!

I think the US-Aussie dual is the pool is going to come down to the battle to determine the least sick team.

I wondered this too but it sounds like she might have had food poisoning -- I feel like I heard them talking about how she'd been throwing up? Otherwise I feel like it's surprising she was't wearing a mask especially since the only event she competed in was vault -- their first rotation and she went first. So if she'd had a respiratory virus it would have been easy for her to mask after competing without it disrupting her preparation for other events.

China had a rough day on gymnastics and when you see a whole team struggling you have to wonder if they caught the bug. It's too bad because you obviously want to see the best in the world at their best.

I totally get that the Olympic Village is a huge part of the whole thing for the athletes but I can’t imagine leaving any of those variables to the local organizers. I’d bring my own mattress, AC, air purifier, make my own food etc — at least until my event is over.

How am I missing the medal ceremonies?

The gymnastics on tonight, is it s repeat of what was on this afternoon? The announcers are different.

Yes, after watching some gymnastics live this afternoon and what I missed tonight, I was thinking that it must be weird to have two different set of announcers commentate on the same event, plus two different sets of tech teams, etc. I hope they sit far enough away from each other that they don’t overhear what the other team is saying!

Same! Is there a playlist buried somewhere on peacock? I really wanted to see the women’s gymnastics ceremony but the feed dropped before it happened.

Wouldn't you think protein would be an important food group to have enough of?

Climate friendly 🙄🙄

Is the music on the floor routines different? Like maybe they don’t want to pay for the rights in the prime time broadcast? I could swear the music for Jordan and Simone’s floor routines was more intense and fit better when I watched live this afternoon.

I’m on vacation - NBC only showed beam and floor for the women’s team final! Was that true everywhere? We didn’t even get to see bars and vault. WTH? We watched the entire primtetime coverage. I don’t remember them skipping so much in prior years.

Could Simone Biles have a DVT?

Re: DVT. It’s always possible, but I think she became aware of an issue while practicing, which makes it sound like an injury.
