American Katie Grimes places much lower.

Covid is starting to do the rounds of the swimming pool. I don't know about US swimmers, but Adam Peaty is down as well as an Australian 1500m swimmer who had to withdraw. Teams are resorting to masking again.

Oh, no! That's so sad for those athletes.

The kayak events are wild! It’s amazing how they can maneuver through the gates.

SMH and shame on the organizers. This has been a known problem for a long time and they’ve had months if not years to figure out a contingency plan. Plan B should have been to plan an alternative location for the triathlon in another body of water. They can surf in Tahiti, surely they could find another river or lake in France and plan the course around that. Not cut out 1/3 of the race! I feel bad for the athletes who may get screwed due to sheer incompetence.

When I saw all the heavy rain during the opening ceremony I had a feeling this would happen. They really needed relatively dry weather in the days leading up to the event.

Especially unfair since I'm guessing triathletes have areas they're stronger/weaker. If the swimming is your best portion of the race, now you're at a disadvantage.

Grimes also had the 400 IM yesterday, which is a brutal event. That probably sapped some of her energy for today. She is also scheduled to swim the 10k open water event! Nothing if not versatile.

Sad for Lani Pallister (the AUS swimmer for the 1500 who had to withdraw). Hopefully the COVID stays at bay and doesn’t widely affect anyone else.

Already in the air as everyone arrived. Athletes sign a contract can't sue if get sick from heat or covid. Hopefully they make it through. Biles set to compete in four areas today.

Yes!

As someone who is not athletic, competitive, or good under pressure, I am always amazed that there are people who willingly do this. I am such a chill, satisfied slug.

Same. I used to be a competitive swimmer (good enough for college Division 3) and now I wonder, how the heck did I do this for 3 hours a day. Now I try to swim 4 laps and I'm all out of breath. I love watching these athletes reach the absolute heights of human endurance and athleticism... from the comfort of my couch with a beer.

I’ve been watching mostly Canadian coverage. NBC’s commentary drives me nuts.

Those kind of images stick with you. I still remember the divers diving outside with the city of Barcelona as a backdrop in the 1992 Summer Olympics. Talk about stunning!

Watching the swimming now (no spoilers). Kaylee McKeown-Regan Smith matchup for the 100bk will not disappoint, I’m sure. Katherine Berkoff may be in the mix for a medal as well. Huske and G. Walsh going up again for the 100fr semis.
I would love to see Daniel Wiffen win a gold for Ireland in the 800fr, to add to McSharry’s bronze in the 100br… Ireland afaik hasn’t medaled in swimming since Michelle Smith in 1996, who turned out to be a drug cheat. So I’m OK if he beats Bobby Finke for gold.

Peacock is pretty good. Much of the feed is without commentary. Other times s lot of the commentators seem to be Australian or Kiwis or Brits or former competitors who can explain the sports.

Are you only watching NBC at night?
