Olympics Opening Ceremony

^ I watched it with a VPN and listened to the French commentary on a French TV channel. Much better than NBC.

I LOVED it. The Ceremony was full of bold choices and really brought forward the history of the host city.

The river forces everyone into a slower rhythm. People forget forces of nature, but today on the Seine and with the driving rain, it was a pointed reminder that we humans depend on a benevolent climate... which is fitting for Games that purport to be more climate-friendly.

I think it was a stroke genius to anchor the Ceremony outside, and have a montage of video clips and live action. Yes, boats go slower! Learn to appreciate it.

These organizers have raised the bar sky high for the next organizers!

You don't think we can appease climate or make or angry do you?

Why is she there. Just yuck.

10 pages and nobody's pointed out how screwed Los Angeles is? Aside from Hollywood effects, anything in Sofia Stadium will look lame compared to tonight's river ceremony.

No, I'm sure that's all been overlooked and ignored.

Ok provide insight. Truly curious.

When you think about it this boat parade may be easier to secure than a stadium filled with thousands of people.

DP. They have massive amounts of security.

PARIS—France is transforming its capital city into an open-air fortress, rolling out the largest peacetime security operation in the country’s history to protect athletes, residents and more than 10 million visitors during the Olympic Games.

Officials say as many as 45,000 police, 10,000 soldiers and 22,000 private security guards will keep watch at the Paris Olympics, which began Wednesday and spans the heart of the city—on streets, at landmarks and in the waters of the Seine River.

Authorities are preparing for potential attacks by Islamist militants, as well as state-sponsored sabotage originating in Russia or Iran, French officials said. Wars in Ukraine and Gaza have magnified those threats, according to Western officials and security experts.

France is mobilizing nearly three times as many security personnel as the number deployed for the London Olympics, the last one held in Europe.

Same here. So glad I didn’t have to listen to American commentators try to figure out what was going on.

River parade - took forever but I liked it.

Poor Marie Antoinette. That was disrespectful. Also had to inject drag/“pride” into everything, why the Last Supper? Try that with other religions and good luck.

Wth in the library?? Stick to the topic. London honored it’s culture and history 1,000x better.

spoiler alert:
Did they forget the hot air balloon and go back on the boat to get the torch to the remaining french athletes, paraolympiams? Felt like the balloon should have been lit and arrived near/at the ETower to close out the show. Something felt missing after it was lit and ended there. Anyone else?

For those of you who watched the Opening Ceremony this afternoon (live I presume?), did you watch on Peacock? NBC is showing it tonight. Just curious about how you saw it before NBC showed it in the US.

Exactly!! Why him? They could have let the scientists responsible for the COVID vaccine carry the torch!

What was the social or political reason for having so many black people in prominent roles in the French aspects of the ceremony? Don't get me wrong I enjoyed it all, that lady who with that very stodgy military band was fabulous, the opera singer was someone I want to hear more of and the torch bearer were people I would like to learn more about, but this all had to be intentional. We didn't see much Arab/N. African representation. Why the deliberate black representation?

Are they French? Even if not they still would have been a better choice.
