You do realize it works for a lot of kids, right?

It doesn’t AT ALL. They just won’t open up to you or tell you anything. Even when they go to college.

It literally IS working, though. He's not having sex. Doubt he will through college, at least if he's accepted to Annapolis. Sure, after graduation, all bets are off, but YES, until then, that threat of dismissal keeps him abstinent. He's told me he's terrified of getting a girl pregnant, and that's why he's not doing it. Why aren't you believing anyone? Do you honestly believe all teens are having sex? That's just...bizarre.

I can buy that all teens aren't having sex, but I can't buy that your male teen is having these conversations with you. You seem very enmeshed.

You don't think that's how a teen boy would reply when his parents have the safe sex conversation with him and remind him of what a pregnancy would do to his plans? A single conversation does not "enmeshed" make, but keep projecting, I guess.

Let me ask how many virgins are at Annapolis?!?! ZERO

Wake up mom! He is not waiting until 22yrs old unless he is a disgusting dork no one wants to get near. You are literally insane!!!!

He's always been risk-adverse.

Then he definitely shouldn't go into the military.

I think you're a troll.

You people will do anything to justify your disgusting, impulsive behavior.

It sounds like he doesn't understand how birth control works. I'm not condoning that teens should have sex, but it sounds unhinged that he's terrified. I wouldn't pat myself on the back if I were you.

Birth control isn't 100%, especially the male kind. Like I said, if he were a girl, we might very well be having a different discussion. But condoms plus the lack of control over a pregnancy outcome makes this a different situation.

Having sex with only one person is crazier than teens having sex. I said what I said.

Male birth control (ie condoms ) is not 100% mostly because teen boys do it wrong; they do not understand lube, and that sometimes leads to breakage.

Parents need to talk to boys about this. And supply lube.

Would you bet your college degree on a 2-18% (perfect to typical use) failure rate? I won't even bet my empty nester years on that.

Maybe your DD can give an invited talk on that topic?
Anonymous
For kids avoiding sex only because they are worried about pregnancy, they are usually having a lot of oral sex and anal. And they definitely need the HPv vaccine and to be aware of STD risks. Many people don’t realize that a high percentage of sore throat cases are actually STDs.

If kids are avoiding sex for other reasons (realizing that they aren’t ready for it, lack of partner, religion), then they may avoid these “everything but” approaches.
