More demand during the pandemic allowed all of these private schools to seem more selective because they had more applicants to choose from! So every school seems like they have higher standards for admission than they did before.
Kinda.
I’m not sure you can call it “white flight” given the diversity of applicants desperately trying to avoid MCPS high schools. I think it has more to do with parents of all races struggling to get their kids into a better environment.
While they had 1k applicants for 300 seats last year, I suspect they will have over 1,200 this year.
I graduated from an area private a million years ago and GC was known as a public school with tuition. It was a jab at the school’s students as well as the lack of academic rigor. That was both before and after it went co-ed like SJC.
For whatever reason, it has become ridiculously “popular.” I think a lot of it has to do with kids and parents wanting a neighborhood/suburban school without a DC commute.
I bet someone could make a fortune opening up another suburban private high school.
