1. Why was he released from the facility? Clearly, he is not well.
2. Given that he had threatened to shoot up the military base, why was he permitted to own a gun - any gun?

The document, circulated to law enforcement officials, said Card had been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks in the summer of 2023. It did not provide details about his treatment or condition but said Card had reported "hearing voices and threats to shoot up" the military base. A telephone number listed for Card in public records was not in service.

These are the right questions

No they aren't. We don't lock up people with mental illness indefinitely, nor should we. And the gun was either legally his or illegal. There are so many AR-15s around, they are very common.

The question is.... why did he have it given he was in a mental health facility for 2 weeks and had threatened to shoot up a base? This is the textbook case of where a red flag law is applicable.

Maine does not have red flag laws.

And this is why we need a federal solution. Another reason is all the guns that pour into Illinois from Indiana.

Actually seeing as how Maine has a strong gun culture, I am very surprised none of his targets had a gun and shot back.

If you can't beat them, you have to join them.

This little fantasy Wild West world isn’t logical.

Something tells me there wasn’t time to do so.

Uvalde was the end of the good guy with a gun theory. When trained law enforcement financed by tax payer dollars won't even take on theis ridiculous weapons, it is time for them to go. (Again...they were banned before and the world continued to spin)

I bet the guy is in his underground bunker in the woods with his guns and MREs.

It started on page 1.

We're learning. Now we need to start doing.

Blah blah blah. Nothing in the constitution is absolute. SCOTUS decides what it means and that opinion changes when SCOTUS changes. Ask all the women that now live in forced birther states.

I'm not American but I don't understand this logic.
Protection from... what, the government?
Do people think their rifle will protect them and their family somehow if the government (with all of their equipment) comes after you while you hole yourself up inside your house? Is this their line of thinking?

In this guy's world, mass shooters are normal and not a big deal.

Point being, laws can be changed, and rights can be lost. Ask us how we know.

The irony is that there are a lot of 2A Republicans in Lewiston and even more in the surrounding rural area. It’s a very purple area - they voted for Biden in 2020 but sent Collins back to the Senate. Very white, lots of guns, but no one seemed to be able to do anything to stop this psychopath.

Serious question — how many people personally affected by mass shootings still prescribe to this rhetoric? Do they change their tune when gun violence comes to their town or school? It just seems easy to say this stuff when you don’t truly think it will happen to you.

Well before the point of needing/hoping a mental health professional can derail this type of situation, something within our society is causing unbelievable levels of mental instability in a sizable number of individuals. Why?

There have always been crazy people. They didn't have AR 15s and we didn't have instant mass media.

Also, many of them were medicated and hospitalized for life with no access to weapons of any kind. Consequently, many of them weren't becoming parents and passing on their genetic makeup or attempting to raise children.

Take it up with Reagan.

Tell me what it's going to take.

Sandy Hook didn’t change anything, nothing will. I gave up then. I had no connection to the families except that I was a parent too and I was traumatized. Americans suck.

100% agree.

Yep.

There’s nuance there, though. Nothing will change…..as long as people keep voting for republicans.

Period.
