Northam pardons scandal-scarred state Sen. Joe Morrissey

Virginia’s outgoing governor has pardoned a state senator who was jailed after a sex scandal that involved a 17-year-old receptionist who later became his wife.

Sen. Joe Morrissey told The Associated Press that Gov. Ralph Northam, a fellow Democrat, issued a pardon for the 2014 misdemeanor Thursday.

“I’m very grateful to the governor,” Morrissey said Friday.


“As I’ve said repeatedly on the floor of the state Senate: When you show compassion to other people and mercy, it’s not a sign of weakness, but usually just the opposite — strength,” Morrissey added.

Morrissey’s pardon was first reported by The Richmond Times-Dispatch. Northam leaves office Saturday. He said in a news release that he granted pardons to more than 1,200 Virginians during the past four years, including exonerations for eight people who were wrongfully convicted.

“Virginians are forgiving people, who believe in second chances,” Northam said in a statement. “When people make mistakes, and pay their debts, they deserve the opportunity to return and be productive members of society.”

The pardon is another rung on the ladder of redemption for Morrissey, 64, a scandal-scarred politician who has been disbarred twice and calls himself “Fighting Joe. ”

The pardon stems from a scandal that began when Morrissey was in the House of Delegates nearly eight years ago. He resigned his seat after being convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, his receptionist at his law firm.

Morrissey won reelection as an independent in a special election a month later. For the next two months, he spent his days working at the General Assembly. But he served his nights in jail as part of a work-release sentence on the conviction, for which he is now pardoned.

In March 2015, Morrissey resigned his seat in the House to run for the Virginia State Senate, but failed to qualify for the Democratic primary ballot.

In 2016, he was the frontrunner in the Richmond mayor’s race until a legal client accused him of making unwanted sexual advances and sending her lewd text messages.

Former Maryland college town mayor pleads guilty to 140 child pornography charges

The former mayor of a Maryland college town pleaded guilty Wednesday to 140 charges stemming from child pornography possession and distribution, prosecutors said.

Patrick Wojahn had served as the mayor of College Park for about eight years before his resignation and arrest in March.

Wojahn pleaded guilty to 60 counts of distribution of child pornography, 40 counts of possession of child pornography, and 40 counts of possession of child pornography with the intention to distribute, according to a Wednesday news release from Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Wojahn is scheduled to be sentenced on November 20. CNN has reached out to Wojahn’s attorney, David Moyse, for comment.

“This is a horrific case,” said Aisha N. Braveboy, the state’s attorney for Prince George’s County. “I am truly pleased that Mr. Wojahn has pled guilty to and accepted responsibility for his actions and these horrendous crimes.”

Authorities began investigating Wojahn in February after they received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, indicating child pornography was distributed by someone in Prince George’s County, according to the release.

“Our children are both precious and vulnerable, deserving of the utmost protection. The tragedy of them being preyed upon in cases like this cannot be understood,” Braveboy added.

Prior to his arrest, Wojahn had taken the mayoral post in College Park — home to the state’s flagship University of Maryland — in 2015 after having served on the city’s council beginning in 2007.

At the time of this arrest in March, city officials expressed they were shocked and disturbed by the accusations against Wojahn.

“As a former elected official, the College Park Community put its faith and support in him to serve each resident and their best interests,” Braveboy said Wednesday. “Instead, he let them down in a most disgraceful way.”

On Thursday, October 12, 2023, members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Cyber Crimes Unit executed a search warrant at the residence of JEFFREY D. GROSSMAN during an Internet child sexual abuse material investigation. The investigation revealed that GROSSMAN used the Internet to view, download and possess items depicting nude and/or sexually explicit prepubescent and pubescent children.

As a result of the investigation, JEFFREY D. GROSSMAN was arrested on Thursday, October 12, 2023, in Tenafly, NJ and charged with second-degree possession of child pornography, N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4(b)5(b)ii. GROSSMAN was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, NJ.

Former Erie County Democratic chairman Steve Pigeon pleads guilty to sexually abusing a child

Former Erie County Democratic chairman Steve Pigeon has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a child.

Erie County District Attorney John Flynn says the 63-year-old is being sentenced in December to one year in prison.

This comes as a jury trial was scheduled to begin in December.

The DA's office says Pigeon subjected a child he knew, younger than 11, to sexual contact.

While Pigeon could have received up to seven years in prison, Flynn says the victim did not want to testify.

"[The] victim's family, brother, sister [and] other relatives, were going to be witnesses at the trial as well, and the family just didn't want to go through that and I don't blame them,” he said.

Pigeon continues to be released on his own recognizance.

Erie County District Attorney John Flynn said Pigeon allegedly engaged in sexual intercourse and sexual conduct with a child less than 11-years-old at a location in Erie County sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas of 2016. The child was known to Pigeon.

Jerry Harris, former Biden campaign surrogate and star of the Netflix documentary Cheer, was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for sex crimes involving minors. The disgraced cheerleader pleaded guilty in February to sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy in a bathroom at a cheer competition and paying another underaged child to send him sexually explicit photos and videos on Snapchat.

Harris was arrested days later.

A former Democratic mayor of a Northern California city has pleaded no contest to six counts of child sex crimes, according to reports.

Robert Jacob, the 45-year-old former mayor of Sebastopol in Sonoma County, reached a plea deal earlier this month ahead of the jury trial that had been scheduled for Friday, the Press Democrat reported.

The victim, a minor who turned 16 by the time of a March court hearing, testified that he met Jacob on the Grindr dating app, according to the paper. He said that Jacob knew he was underage.


The victim had also said that Jacob sent him nude photos, touched him sexually multiple times and invited unknown men to have sex with him.

The charges that Jacob pleaded no contest to include contacting the victim with the intent to commit a specific offense, arranging to meet the victim to engage in lewd and lascivious acts and committing acts of sexual abuse against a victim under age 15.

Five other felony counts were dismissed as part of the plea bargain, the San Francisco Chronicle reported, citing online records from the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office.

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – The newest elementary school principal within Oklahoma’s Western Heights public school district reportedly moonlights as a drag queen and has a criminal history.

The crime for which he was previously arrested is child pornography. First reported by V1SUT, Dr. Shane Brent Murnan, 52, had his personal devices confiscated by police back in 2001 on suspicion of possession of child pornography.

At the time, Murnan was a fifth grade teacher at Will Rogers Elementary School in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Two weeks after his devices were confiscated, Murnan was arrested.

At the hearing, Appeals Court Associate Judge Dave Allen said that it was “clear from a review of the pictures that they do represent child pornography.” One year later, Payne County District Judge Donald L. Worthington dismissed the charge against Murnan.

Murnan’s attorneys maintained that he obtained the pictures by “accident” and that the ages of the children in the photos could not be “proven.” According to reports, due to the charges, Murnan lost his teaching job.

However, his record was expunged and the charges were dismissed after he completed probation for a drug charge in October 2003.

In 2007, Murnan became a school teacher at a rural Oklahoma school district. In 2016, he moved to an elementary school position at Oklahoma City Public Schools. From 2020-2022, Murnan worked as an assistant vice principal before now becoming a principal at John Glenn Elementary School.

For two decades, Murnan moonlighted as a drag queen named Shantel Mandalay. In a letter to parents, Brayden Savage, superintendent of Western Heights Public Schools, wrote, “I am writing to address a concern you may read about on social media. We understand the situation may cause concerns and questions among parents, staff and community members.”

Savage claims that “usual hiring practices” were followed when vetting Murnan, including checking references and conducting a felony criminal background check. The letter said that a “safe learning environment” was the district’s priority.

After getting his record expunged in 2003, Murnan spent the next three years launching his Shantel Mandalay persona.

Late in 2020, while Murnan was working at Prairie Queen Elementary School, the state entered a new criminal probable cause initial filing with Murnan as the defendant. In a social media post welcoming Murnan to the school, the district acknowledged the charges previously brought against their now-principal.

“This evening, the Board of Education approved the hiring of Dr. Shane Murnan for the Head Principal position at John Glenn Elementary. Recently, the district has been made aware of previous charges that were dismissed more than 20 years ago. Dr. Murnan has been serving the field of education for more than 25 years and has an outstanding reputation. He comes highly recommended from previous supervisors, colleagues, and educators.”

“Recently, information began circulating about Dr. Murnan and the charges he faced more than 20 years ago for an alleged crime involving child pornography,” the letter to parents continued. “According to news reports at the time, those charges were dismissed by the court, and the record of the charges has been expunged. Since that time, Dr. Murnan has continued to be certified as an elementary school teacher and principal, including having his certificate renewed in April of 2023 and signed by State Superintendent Ryan Walters. The State Department of Education would have conducted another felony background check upon renewing his certification.”

The letter assured parents that a “safe learning environment” was the district’s priority, and that they were aware of and handling the matter.

“Life is about experiences and choices. I’ve made a lot of bad decisions in my lifetime and learned from them. I’ve also made some amazing decisions,” Murnan, whose on-stage name is Shantel Mandalay, said in a Facebook post on his drag page. “One of those was becoming an educator. Having the opportunity to work with kids and encouraging them to do and be their best is so rewarding. Sometimes just making them feel loved or just putting a smile on their face is all they need.”

Murnan works at the Boom in Oklahoma City, a gay bar that hosts a “Sunday gospel brunch” that features “a farcical church service.” One event was called the “Sunday Brunch Revival” and advertised “#ChurchAtAGayBar.”
