Just read all of this quickly. Have a 9th grader starting at Walls in the fall who may play baseball, so it’s especially relevant.
Re Jelleff, it’s Much more convenient than Banneker. Yes, it’s only a difference of 40 min v 50 min walking, but by bus it’s 20-25 min, v 45-50 min for Banneker. How the mayor and DPR aren’t shamed into addressing this I don’t understand. Washington Post should keep the store it’s coming and see if it leads to any pressure. |
| Some charter schools are doing their 8th grade promotions at Lisner, so I don’t think Walls having its graduation there is necessarily a sign of any warming to Walls or generosity on the part of GW. |
This disregards where the actual baseball players may prefer to practice. I know 1/2 the team either lives on Capitol Hill, relatively near Banneker/Petworth or otherwise East of the Park. While these kids may save 15-20 minutes off their commute to Jellef (although the team usually metros to Banneker, so not sure what the time is for Metro), they just added an hour+ to their commute home. |

For as long as we’ve known JR Crew took on any DCPS student willing to put the work in. It’s a late and sudden change that puts kids who opted out of private for SWW in a place of having to decide school vs sport when other years didn’t have to choose.
It just seems that they should have said something before school decisions.
If crew is a priority, then pick JR as many kids do. We all have to make choices…the JR crew team receives exactly $0 from the school or DCPS. It is a club sport, not a DCPS sport. This. Really unclear to me why families think that their child should have ALL the opportunities. Do your research. J-R crew is a club, not a school sport. If you want your child to have access to this club they have to be enrolled at J-R. |

Expecting parents that Tun a club team at a high school that your kid doesn’t attend to make public announcements for your convenience seems rather entitled. They are running a club at their kids’ school. It’s not a public utility or something that other kids have some kind of right to. |

If you want your child to have access to this club they have to be enrolled at J-R. SWW was never, nor should it be viewed as a "free" private school. Nobody should attend SWW thinking they will have access to a nationally-ranked sports team unless the school itself creates it. You go to SWW to play on a varsity sport (with few if any cuts made on the teams), but any SWW-recruited athlete gets offers for what they do outside of SWW (on a club/travel team). You could have attended NCS/STA (or Gonzaga) and known you would be joining a nationally-ranked crew program as well. The parent volunteer board members of a DCPS club sports team have no responsibility to generally inform the public of changes that are outside their control as to how regatta teams are qualified. |

This is what a lot seem to think along with not realizing that it's a Humanities based school. A little research and you understand what you're getting. |

Walls pulls kids from all over the city. Lots are from Takoma Park, Brookland, Capitol Hill, etc. Many of them go to Walls because they can't go to J-R or private schools.
People who say "just enroll in J-R" act like anybody who feels like it can just go there. |

It does have a humanities focus but it is perfectly fine for STEM students as well. I know Walls students this year who have been accepted into highly regarded Engineering programs including Carnegie Mellon and Michigan. |

Why shouldn’t loving and responsible parents want their children to “have ALL the opportunities”? What’s wrong with wanting and striving for the best for your children? Some of you have very low expectations…and you’ll get what you accept. |

We turned down a spot at a private with a nationally ranked crew program for financial reasons, but also knowing the Jackson Reed crew program was an option. This notice came after we turned down private and then chose SWW over Jackson Reed. Now we’re stuck and can’t go back in time and accept those spots. Not in boundary, so no luck. Really just wish they let us know about this change before decisions were due.
