Sports at Walls (WaPo article)

I feel bad for the Walls students who want to represent their school and play sports. Why is GW so stingy with allowing access to their athletic facilities?

The same way DPR is with Hardy.

I'll feel sorry for the Walls baseball team when every kid in DC feels safe going to school.

Good question. Wasn’t the school supposed to be a partnership between DCPS and GW?

Also, DCPS does not help the school at all with figuring out playing space.
DC parks and recs gives the school zero priority in reserving field space. Instead they prefer to lease field space to private schools who can pay more money. The Walls PTA has to give money to lease field space as DCPS does not include any money in the Walls budget to deal with this issue.

I really think the relationship with GW needs to be reevaluated. SWW is not being served well at all. It doesn't appear the kids have been able to use any facilities. I know the basketball teams, cheer, etc. go thru a lot just to be able to practice. Nothing normal about what they are doing.

I have a rising Walls 9th grader so I’m just learning about these issues. It almost appears that GW resents having Walls on its “campus.”

Does GW allow Walls to use its facilities for graduation and special events (homecoming, prom, etc)?

DC's idea of what are reasonable standards for public education is pathetic.

Students should feel (and be) safe AND should have access to sports. Funny, but maybe those goals are complementary, not in competition.

Many of the neighborhoods Walls students are commuting to for sports practices and games are dangerous (old Banneker field across from Howard U, RFK stadium, etc). Look it up—shootings, car jackings, and armed robbery aren’t unusual in these neighborhoods.

I agree! DCPS’ standards for facilities and academics are so low…the bar is on the floor.

DCPS isn't paying GW nearly enough to get use of college athletic facilities for whole seasons

Can't believe there's no mention of Jelleff in this story. It's walkable from Walls.

Graduation is at Lisner this year but doubt the rest. Dances are held elsewhere.

I don’t think there’s a baseball field there, so it might not have seemed relevant to the story. But I agree that it should have been referenced as an example of DCPS priorities and precedents.
