“A Notre Dame professor who had just taken a leadership role at RLI purchased Barrett's private home months after she was sworn in in October 2020.

The group, which advocates for religious freedom, was founded in 2020 and has filed numerous amicus briefs in cases related to the issue—related to questions surrounding abortion, public health precautions, and school prayer—since it was established. RLI has filed at least nine briefs with the court since the sale of Barrett's home.”

Yep.

Funny how no billionaires or interest groups are looking to fund my vacations. I'm think I'm very likable but for some reason no billionaires have reached out to befriend me. I guess Alito and Thomas are just some really cool dudes who everyone wants to be friends with.

This is a looney tunes statement by Leonard Leo.

Apparently its ethics rules for thee but not for me.

It’s not just “the left” that’s concerned but of course Alito has no concept of reality.

“Late liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg in 2018 took a trip to Israel compliments of billionaire Morris Kahn, who had business before the court just a year earlier.“

Retired Justice Stephen Breyer, took at least 225 subsidized trips between 2004 and 2016. They include a 2013 trip to the exclusive island of Nantucket compliments of private-equity billionaire David Rubenstein, Gabe Roth, executive director of the group Fix the Court, reported.

There were 1,309 trips Supreme Court justices took compliments of others between 2004 and 2019, according to a list compiled by the watchdog group Open Secrets. That’s nine trips per justice, per year, and it’s unlikely they stayed at the Holiday Inn on most of them.”

And those are just the ones that justices have disclosed. It’s unclear how many — like decades of Thomas’ travels — have been unreported, or whether the justices will suffer any consequences for not reporting them.”

Looks like it’s endemic. New laws?

Here's my question. Republicans are hopping mad that Biden supposedly took a bunch of money from some unknown people during a time when he wasn't even in power and couldn't do any official favors (never mind that no one can show that Biden even got any money even though they have his bank records). But they say it's just fine that Alito and Thomas actually took very expensive gifts from billionaires with cases in front of the court, and where they ruled in favor of those billionaires' positions. So say that it turns out Biden did get some gifts. So what? How's that any different from Alito and Thomas?

Absolutely need new laws. They should be banned from receiving any gifts or outside income with only a few exceptions (family, very small amounts, etc.). If they need to go on official travel, the taxpayer should be paying for it. If it's private travel, they should pay for themselves. That is more or less the rule for executive branch employees, most of whom have much less power than the justices.

I think you’ll find that Democrats don’t care if it’s Alito or Kagan who’s accepted gifts like private plane trips to luxury resorts. Let the chips fall where they may. Change the rules about gifts, term limit the judges, etc.

YES NEW LAWS. Why are Republicans so stupid that they don’t get that that’s what we want, we want money out of politics!! John Roberts, he of citizens united infamy, has no problem with money in politics. Republicans don’t either, evidently, as evidenced by the Wall Street Journal op ed that tries and fails to claim that sane people have a problem with the regressive court members’ corruption because of “sour grapes” rather than a desire to not live in a banana republic.

I’d be curious if your weirdly lopsided (really, dude? She’s dead. Not a super relevant example) example’s Open Secrets source breaks it down. “Nine trips per justice” sounds like a right wing rewording to avoid the fact that Alito and Thomas probably took the lion’s share of trips and probably more political and fun trips whereas the liberal justices probably took more educational/teaching trips.

This is where regressives get super duper confused, in all aspects of the law. They truly don’t want the law evenly applied and can’t see the point of it; they want special treatment for themselves and their “team,” always.

100%. New laws, limits, etc. Regardless of their own political affiliation.
