Gorsuch is absolutely correct. It was not a threat at all. He was warning him that an independent judiciary means an INDEPENDENT judiciary.
It is one of the three branches of government, separate from the executive and legislative.

Agree they should ban gifts for all of them but Thomas isn’t just “more than most” — he’s like 90% of the total.

There are currently no ethics regulations pertaining to the Supreme Court and no outside authority with the power to enforce any. They’re bound only by their own consciences, integrity, and sense of propriety. That’s the problem.
