Do you even have kids, or kids in school?
All parent volunteers (aka chaperones, classroom assistance, whatever) have to fill out volunteer forms, watch a "training" video, and have a background check.

And that would make you feel safe? Having a random parent sleep in the tent with your kid? Yes, I’m a parent and that’s why it disturbs me. I also volunteer regularly in the schools and I’ve taken the training, its a check the box video that’s not going to prevent any abusive behavior.

So don't let your kid go on the trip.

Random parents do not and will not sleep in the same tents as random kids. This goes against every sexual abuse prevention guideline on the planet.

I agree it's a bad idea but yes, random parent chaperones DO sleep in tents with kids not their own. This is how it worked for my kids' outdoor lab field trip. A parent was in every tent with kids not their own.

Do you think they have separate tents for each parent and their own kid? lol

My DD was in a tent with a girl and her mom. I knew them but she was in fact in a tent with a random person. This way a LONG time ago so it may have changed.

Exactly. APS should definitely rethink this. They are asking for trouble.

We have seen some pretty awful behavior from APS parents - on here, on AEM, at School Board meetings, at PTA meetings, even in the Teams classes during the pandemic. I don't want these parents anywhere near my kids, especially not overnight when I am not there.

Yes that is exactly what I think. My kid and husband went last month. The paperwork said my husband was ONLY allowed to sleep in a tent with his kid or another adult. If he wished to sleep alone, he had to bring his tent from home (which is what he did since my kid wanted to share a tent with his friends).

There aren't even enough parents who chose to chaperone to split kids into a tent. Only 3 kids can fit into a tent. With an adult it is one adult and one kid. There are not 20 plus adults chaperoning each class.

Do folks here never send their kids to sleep away camp or scouts? All of these facilities have similar rules.

There is nothing inherently dangerous with kids sleeping in tents together without an adult.

My DD is in middle school now but went to Oakridge from K to 5th grade. We quite liked the principal and never had any issues. She was always very pleasant to us and my DD. I don't know how she was with the teachers, but she was always willing to meet with us and address any issues. We had a great experience at Oakridge. I never heard any of the other parents in the neighborhood express any concerns.

That's not how it worked for my kid. They absolutely had adults in tents with kids not their own. They did not get much sleep!

A lot of parents volunteered to chaperone.

Not the PP but my kids were in tents with a random parent-they tried to pair you with a friend/parent you knew. One is now a sophomore in college and one is a HS senior. I have no idea what years that would have been-a while ago.

What’s worse than sexual assault? Murder?

sexual assault is sadly not uncommon on trips, and I think it's worse when somebody who is older is the perpetrator. There have been incidents of camp counselors assaulting minors, and here, assuming this was sexual assault, it was done by a 10-year old. But we are going to keep the programs where it was an adult committing the crime, and cancel a program where it was a little kid committing the crime?

Police would be called when its two minors involved?

Yes.

No it was a few years ago. So maybe it changed. But from what others are saying, it sounds like it varies by school. Which is par for the course in APS.

I think most people here are talking about their experiences pre covid and pre institution of the new background check policy for volunteers. My kid was one of the first kids to go on the overnight trip post covid. I imagine rules are similar now and it should be an APS policy. I doubt APS wants to open itself up to that kind of lawsuit

Unless you have info on the current procedures, you only serve to confuse the situation.

*If* she likes the teacher, i.e. if the teacher hasn't questioned what Dr. Wright does and they do exactly what she wants. If not, she makes things more difficult on them. And actually many teachers have left specifically because they felt entirely ignored and got zero support from Dr. Wright.

So if your daughter is in middle school, you may remember when Wright transitioned away from letter grades in 3-5 to what is now the SBG report card? Well, her first proposal was to not give grades at all. When the parents pushed back on this, she threw her own teachers under the bus by claiming that this was THEIR idea and she was merely supporting them. She took no accountability for her decision, and only after parent outrage did she agree to the SBG report card as a compromise. She also was responsible for the adoption of the disastrous Lucy Calkins reading program, that has since been abandoned.

My children and I never had a personal issue with her. She was always lovely to my children. But it doesn't make up for the fact that she's a terrible principal.

No one on here has info about system wide current procedures.

People commenting on sleeping in tents with kids 5 years ago when others are sharing that its not how things are done currently are confusing things.

Not surprised this incident happened with the Apex kids infiltrating the elementary
