Even with that, as it was noted above, parents are only allowed in tents with their own kids typically. DH went this year. Kids actually all slept in one common room (divided for girls/ boys) because it was in the 20s at night. Parents and teachers slept in the came room as the kids (but away from them as they could). The Parents didn't really sleep lol. |
And that would make you feel safe? Having a random parent sleep in the tent with your kid? Yes, I’m a parent and that’s why it disturbs me. I also volunteer regularly in the schools and I’ve taken the training, its a check the box video that’s not going to prevent any abusive behavior. |
Just pointing out that abuse can happen between same gender children, and it does. |
People are suggesting unthread that a parent stay in the tent to prevent abusive behavior between the children. |
Our school (with mostly working parents) had so many volunteers they were turning people away. I get that they have to review policies and procedures. But this program has been going on for ages-- I really hope one bad experience doesn't mean the end of it. Unfortuately... I fear it might. |
I have talked to several staff and they love her kindness and support. As APS continues to put more and more on the teachers plates, she works to help with the workload so they can do their jobs and focus on the students. |
So don't let your kid go on the trip. |
Who is this referring to? |
No one is saying it doesn't. But what do you propose? Never having kids alone together their entire lives? |
Random parents do not and will not sleep in the same tents as random kids. This goes against every sexual abuse prevention guideline on the planet. |
Wow, dramatic. When else are children unsupervised for long periods at school? Not having 5th graders sleep together unsupervised in a tent on a field trip is hardly the same as never letting them be alone. But that doesn’t happen anyway- not at lunch, recess, etc. Unless it’s a bathroom trip, kids are supervised. |
I agree it's a bad idea but yes, random parent chaperones DO sleep in tents with kids not their own. This is how it worked for my kids' outdoor lab field trip. A parent was in every tent with kids not their own. Do you think they have separate tents for each parent and their own kid? lol |
And yes it's a horrible idea. Risk is much higher to kids from adults than from other 10 year olds. See for example - https://dailyprogress.com/news/local/charlottesville-mother-arrested-on-child-porn-attempted-exploitation-charges/article_eb01979a-d3f0-11ed-8516-6749777298d4.html |
My DD was in a tent with a girl and her mom. I knew them but she was in fact in a tent with a random person. This way a LONG time ago so it may have changed. |
Exactly. APS should definitely rethink this. They are asking for trouble. |
