What does "they do fine" mean? I know we all have different expectations for our kids. At least "get accepted to UMCP" fine? Most non-IB kids have stats high enough for UMCP?

Yes. Believe it or not, there is a contingent of UMC kids (white and Asian too!) who opted not to do IB. They are taking AP classes and will do fine after graduation.

JW mom always shows up.

? DP. The RM haters are mostly not RM parents because if they were, they would know that, indeed, lots of UMC at RM are not in IB. They take AP and some even do dual enrollment.

Lots of trolling here.

You honestly don't know about the JW mom who shows up and always says the same thing?

I believe it. I mean I'd not all that interested in IB courses and would also prefer to focus on STEM.

? What does that have to do with anything? Trust me - I know white, UMC kids from RM who have gone on to UMD and other good schools. The non-IB kids ARE NOT all gang members.

Real-estate agents try to spin this to inflate housing prices, but of course, RM is the same as any other MCPS HS. The same kid will do as well as they would anyplace else. The differences aren't the school but the home life and parents.

Op here. Thanks to everyone for their feedback. Lots to think about.

Good luck. Select wisely.

Yes, just read some of the stereotyping some anti-RM posters have of a diverse school. Too many of "those" kids.

That's the kind of folks your kids would be exposed to - people who stereotype an entire school and the families who go there based on what they hear about but probably have zero experience in.

No one said RM is perfect, but some anti-RM posters are seriously clueless about the student body at RM.

The vast majority of RM kids, even those who are in IB, went to JW. So, I'm pretty sure there is more than one "JW mom".

People are not anti-RM. What you are seeing is people pushing back on posts that make non-IB RM like it's something special. It's not. Non IB RM is no different than any other MCPS HS (except W schools and BCC). They are all pretty f'ed.

RM is JW and IB kids. JW is a terrible middle school and once you get into RM, the IB kids keep to themselves. So many discipline issues at RM. Vaping, drugs, overdoses, fights, sex, sexual assaults, and now guns on campus 2 incidents 10 days apart.

Wootton has Frost and part of Cabin John. No IB but so many high course offerings as the school is competitively smart. The administration is good and the its a very involved school. the negatives is it is pretty high pressure like the IB program and the school isn't as new and nice as RM. And parking is the worst.

But when the kids on the team talk, Wootton kids jaws drop when they hear what typical RM days are like and it's gotten worse every year. I don't hate the school. I love the diversity and school spirit, but it isn't a school to be that proud of. Without IB it is basically Rockville High School.

I actually have a kid at RM and I would agree with this assessment. If you have a kid that will not get caught up in the high pressure environment at Wootton, it might be better.

The bathrooms on the 3rd floor at RM are simply closed off because of too many security issues. And clearly there are safety issues as highlighted over the past several weeks. The principal is doing a good job and trying to engage parents, but there so many things that are out of her control.

We have family friends at Rockville HS and I agree with the assessment that RM without the IB is basically the same as Rockville when you look at the stats/demographics.

That's complete BS. Look at the stats between JWMS which is the only feeder to RM and Earle B Wood MS which is the only feeder to Rockville HS. Very different.

FWIW both clusters -- RM and Wootton -- will be going through boundary changes due to Crown HS being built. MCPS is going to push for more diversity at Wootton, and then you'll see it look more like RM than Churchill, and the test scores and incidences to go with it.

All the areas looking to be redistricted from RM or Wootton to Crown are nice areas. All the areas on the other side or near 355 will stay at RM. Wootton will only lose the Rio apartments/Washingtonian to Crown. RM will lose all of King Farm (RM portions) and the entire Crown will now go to Gaithersburg. It will honestly make RM worse and Wootton better. The main goal of Crown is to clean up Gaithersburg High School. Bussing kids far to other schools for diversity hasn’t worked and there is already a major shortage on bus drivers and buses as is. Wootton has a hugh walking population.

Why would entire Crown go to Gaithersburg but not Crown? This doesn’t make sense

I think they meant the entire King Farm will go to Gaithersburg. Right now the neighborhood is split and half goes to Gaithersburg and the other half goes to Richard Montgomery. It's never made sense. But it is a upper middle class area that will bring more "class" to Gaithersburg High School when they start redistricting. And I think the PP is right. The only thing that will change at Wootton is they have that weird slice of Rio apartments between Fields Rd and Rio that get bussed to Fallsmead/Frost/Wootton. That will get moved to Crown since it will be in walking distance.

This is not accurate. King Farm is split between Gaithersburg and Rockville HS. King Farm is not zoned for RM.

The anti-RM posters make it seem like non IB is like ganglandia. I assure you, it's not. It's not a perfect school, clearly. But some folks make it seem like if your kid isn't in IB then your kid will be exposed to drugs and sex. Please.. private school kids are exposed to drugs and sex, too, as are W kids.

And it's not as if IB kids don't share the common areas with non IB kids or not take classes with them. IB kids take a few classes that are not specific to the IB diploma, so they are in the same classes as non IB kids, like foreign language, AP classes, and some math classes.
