Somebody keeps quoting this 70% acceptance rate and needs to get up to speed on the reality. SCHEV data shows that in 2021-22, for Arlington County, VT's acceptance rate (all majors) was 39.4%, Fairfax County was 40.3%. For all of Virginia it was 44%.

Because a lot more students apply now. VT increased the size of its student body but still applications are growing. See Fairfax County example below for 2015 vs 2021. Big increase in applicants, slight decline (124) in accepted = big drop in acceptance rate.

From Fairfax County:
2021 = 4,888 applied, 1,970 accepted, acceptance rate = 40.3%
2015 = 3,147 applied, 2.094 accepted, acceptance rate = 66.5%

Over 270 kids applied to JMU from my child's school alone. Most of those applications probably met or exceeded the median test/GPA scores for the school.

One factor influencing this is that VT joined the Common App a few years ago and that tends to increase applications. JMU just joined the CA last year so I would expect their admit rate is going to drop quite a bit. Not being on it is essentially a screen for demonstrated interest, how much do you want to make an effort to do the separate application.

The honors college is great. About 50% don't graduate from it but take advantage of all the perks until the capstone project. (Is talk of changing the program to address the attrition). Early registration and the nicest dorm building is worth it. Honors lecture classes are smaller, more interesting topics, and students more involved. Also the SCOM class is less stressful with honors students as your team peers.

I dont have stats but DS from well regarded FCPS HS told me a a number of kids were rejected from JMU. As an alum, find that very surprising.

JMU also just made it onto the National Colleges list on US News this year (used to be on the Regional Colleges list). That may have made a difference in applications.

Yep. This plus joining the Common App is going to mean a bunch of people getting surprised in the next year or two with a significant drop in acceptance rate.
