+1 My kids' top picks were VT and JMU. Not UVA, not W&M - and they had the stats for all. Sometimes, all it takes is a visit to see where one feels most comfortable. |
Congrats to your DC! JMU is such a great school. Out of curiosity, since JMU is a big school with lot of strong student support for its D1/FBS teams, why did they also apply to W&M and Dickinson which are very distinct from that? I mean, given her stats, she was a lock for JMU and W&M/Dickinson certainly weren't safeties. |
DP. Once again, stick to the facts. VT acceptance rate is 56%. https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/virginia-tech-3754#aftercollege |
Yes. I'm an employer who hires CS grads and we absolutely look at JMU grads as favorably as VT, etc. |
+1 It's the usual troll. |

The more awesome co-workers I have are from JMU or VT. Just really down to earth, friendly people!

These are my daughter’s stats, except some IB,AP. |
FCPS, I was worried when she went Test Optional. |
| DD VA-APS 3.95 WGPA, 1320 SAT, 5 APs, fine but not outstanding ECs. |
THIS ^^. I have yet to meet any alums or current students at JMU or VT who haven't been delightful people. |
Huh? |
JMU was the top choice of the PP's DC and it (JMU) is a school of 20,000 undergrads with an FBS football team with huge tailgate parties, etc. W&M and Dickinson are very different from JMU and are harder to get into. So why apply to W&M or Dickinson when you know you really want to go to JMU and easily have the stats for acceptance there? |
| When do they send notifications about the Honors College? |
Casting a wide net, I suppose. For example, my kid did a complete 180 after her acceptances. We visited all the schools again and that time around. It was different. Besides, there’s something for everyone at JMU. Some kids care about the football team and some don’t. But I don’t think that was the intent of your question. |

Son accepted, fairfax county public. Weighted 4.3 SAT 1360 5 APs, 2 dual enrollment. Weak extra curriculars. Applied to honors college. Per the honors web page, those decisions come out 2 weeks after the EA
For him, he knows he doesn’t have the activities and leadership positions that UVA is looking for and really liked thr feel of JMU when we visited. No real interest in looking out of state. |
