When my older kids applied they were aiming for VT and UVA and W&M and wouldn't think of JMU. They'd go out of state before JMU. I don't see how JMU would be the top choice for a kid who is top of their class? Also, why does it seem so many OOS got in.

JMU is a very popular "safety school" for a lot of kids I know with weighted GPAs of 4.0--4.2. They generally applied to UVA, W&M and VA TECH and a couple of OOS schools as well.

This. DS had a 4.2 and applied JMU as a back up/financial safety. His 1st choice was Virginia Tech and he's there now. Also applied to a few OOS schools and got merit. If he'd not gotten into VT, I'm not sure which option he'd have gone with. JMU would have been significantly less expensive than the OOS w/ merit.

JMU's 75thile GPA = 4.12 so those kids in the 4.0-4.2 range will have plenty of company. The top 25% of the student body = about 1200 students.

My kids' top picks were VT and JMU. Not UVA, not W&M - and they had the stats for all. Sometimes, all it takes is a visit to see where one feels most comfortable.

Congrats to your DC! JMU is such a great school. Out of curiosity, since JMU is a big school with lot of strong student support for its D1/FBS teams, why did they also apply to W&M and Dickinson which are very distinct from that? I mean, given her stats, she was a lock for JMU and W&M/Dickinson certainly weren't safeties.

Va Tech (70 percent acceptance) other than engineering is no where near WM and UVA either

DP. Once again, stick to the facts. VT acceptance rate is 56%.

Anonymous wrote:How are job placements for computer science degree from JMU? Do you feel it is viewed as favorably as other comsci degrees from schools like VT, GMU, UMD? Do employers in the DC metro look at it the same?

Yes. I'm an employer who hires CS grads and we absolutely look at JMU grads as favorably as VT, etc.

Somebody keeps quoting this 70% acceptance rate and needs to get up to speed on the reality. SCHEV data shows that in 2021-22, for Arlington County, VT's acceptance rate (all majors) was 39.4%, Fairfax County was 40.3%. For all of Virginia it was 44%.

JMU was the top choice of the PP's DC and it (JMU) is a school of 20,000 undergrads with an FBS football team with huge tailgate parties, etc. W&M and Dickinson are very different from JMU and are harder to get into. So why apply to W&M or Dickinson when you know you really want to go to JMU and easily have the stats for acceptance there?

Casting a wide net, I suppose. For example, my kid did a complete 180 after her acceptances. We visited all the schools again and that time around. It was different. Besides, there’s something for everyone at JMU. Some kids care about the football team and some don’t. But I don’t think that was the intent of your question.

Son accepted, fairfax county public. Weighted 4.3 SAT 1360 5 APs, 2 dual enrollment. Weak extra curriculars. Applied to honors college. Per the honors web page, those decisions come out 2 weeks after the EA

For him, he knows he doesn’t have the activities and leadership positions that UVA is looking for and really liked thr feel of JMU when we visited. No real interest in looking out of state.
