Mary would be there right now talking to the community. Frumin is where, hiding? |
You know crime is actually down in DC, right? |
I don’t think that is true. Here’s why: 1. Post COVID there are significantly fewer people in DC, permanent residents, commuters, or tourists. So absolute reported crimes may be down, but on a per capita basis crime is actually much higher. 2. Due to decriminalization, there are fewer crimes to enforce (public drug use, turnstile jumping, public camping, etc.). So the absolute number is lower than in prior years. 3. There are 20% fewer police than in recent years, combined with the Ferguson effect, all suppress the number of crimes reported. 4. Large retail chains (the ones that have not left yet) are less link to report property crimes. |
There are so many new commitments, requirements, additional studies, alternative design considerations, traffic calming, etc that this thing is going to get pushed out to 2026 for the next mayor to decide. |
I don’t think you really understand the criminal code rewrite. It redefines and reclassifies crimes and that makes it challenging for all those unwilling to invest more time than the likes of the WaPo EdBo could muster to compare penalties for the same crime between the two codes. You may consider it politically fashionable to paint the rewrite as weakening criminal penalties, but to do so without understanding it is quite silly. And if you’re not silly, you would acknowledge that the time between now and the new code coming in to effect allows a lot of time for the Council to engage meaningfully on the more controversial aspects and amend where need be. There are some aspects of the new legislation I don’t like - such as the potential to place further strain on the courts as those charged with misdemeanors request jury trails - but I’d much rather that gets debated and voted on directly by the Council than by further delaying the implementation of what all informed observers agree was a very necessary and long overdue overhaul of the code. |

All you need to know about the RCCA is that it reduces maximum penalties for carjacking and gun crimes at a time when those crimes are rapidly increasing.
Everything else that people say is just motivated reasoning. |
You are like a dog chasing a bone that was never thrown. https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2023/01/washington-dc-crime-reform-sentencing-fox-news.html |
They won't read it. Has too many words. |
That article uses a lot of words to distract from and does not dispute the truth. Here is what the mayor said when she vetoed the bill. “RCCA reduces sentences for illegally carrying guns on our streets.” “The US Attorney and I have raised objections that the Council has substantially reduced penalties for robberies, carjacking and home invasion burglaries.” https://twitter.com/MayorBowser/status/1610676878402256898 Who do you think has more credibility here? The mayor and US Attorney or a hyper partisan liberal activist opinion writer who does not even deny these basic facts but only tries to obscure them through paragraphs of dreck? Anyway, Frumin now owns every carjacking and act of gun violence in his Ward. What a way to start a career, by jumping off a ledge in a suicide pact. |
| It’s amazing. On Sunday the Mayor holds an all hands on deck meeting crime focused meeting for all the ANC commissioners that worked so hard to elect Frumin. The meeting where she, a lifelong city resident, said she feels less safe than in the 80s. And on Monday, the very next day, the ANC commissioners send the mayor a sharply worded joint letter about. . . . . parking passes! We’re all doomed. |
If the cops don't respond or file a report, it looks like crime is down. In reality, crime is most certainly not down. |
1) the new rules don't take place for two years, so the status quo remains in effect until then, so I suppose Mary Cheh owns those 2) you haven't read the new rules, which have been more than a decade in the making. |
Have you seen any of the videos by the YouTube personality, Scambaiter? He intercepts scam calls and tries to warn the victims that they are not talking to an Amazon rep or whatever, but rather a scammer. Some of the victims refuse his intervention, insist they are not being scammed, and continue to send thousands of dollars to the scammers. You kinda remind me of them. I'm sorry to inform you that tour ignorance is being exploited for profit by morally corrupt politicians and media personalities. |
Do you believe criminal penalties serve as a deterrent effect? |
Thanks for letting everyone know that you are a child so that we can ignore your opinion. |
