Interesting…BASIS DC, a free 100% lottery charter school, had better college admissions this year. |
And they do it with less money. The DCPS funding for charter school students is about 2/3 of the BIM tuition. An extra $10K just disappears into the corporate black hole (I should say red since they lose money overall) with no visible better product as a result. |

Is it worth moving from FCPS AAP to Basis/Mclean? DC thrives in AAP with 4.0 GPA and many more achievements. What will Basis offer that AAP can not offer? Does coming from schools like Baisis increases chances for admission to TJ/ Top colleges?
Any idea about class sizes and how mnay student per 6th grade? Thanks! |
I am a little confused by what you say here. Can you clarify/elaborate a bit? Also, without naming names, can you divulge which teachers are leaving? |
No, unless your DC is struggling socially or with the academic methodology and needs a change of scenery, which you indicate is not at all the case here. It's not offering anything other than a different environment really. For some it may be an improvement, for many it likely is a worse situation, so if you've got a good thing just be ever-so-thankful and hold onto it. |
PP got this exactly backwards. BIM has lots of faults, but this isn't one of them. In April, they say that teachers planning to leave can give notice then and still be paid until the end of the teacher's school year in mid-July. If you wait until later, they only pay you until mid-June. Ditto benefits. It's a reasonable policy so the school DOESN'T have sudden departures to fill when most of the recruiting season for next fall is over. I haven't stayed plugged in there so don't know if anyone is leaving. The job listings were pretty sparse. |
“I haven’t stayed plugged in there” but then also outlines a school policy in detail and claims what was posted is incorrect…? Wait until August and you’ll see, just like every year prior, teachers will give notice at the last minute and the school will scramble for some low-quality replacements. |
In my time there, a vacancy or two at the last minute was typical. Once, a new hire didn't make it through the PD orientation week before he left, and the school had to scramble. A few times people quit suddenly during the year. But that policy I quoted was accurate at the time and is unlikely to have changed. The incentive was in place for the school to find out early and recruit during the main season. Not that I would ever work there again regardless for lots of reasons. I am not surprised so many staff left in the past, and more will in the future. People don't like getting lied to and jerked around by management. |
It's worse than anyone could have imagined. It will be a miracle if the school can even open on time they are so short-staffed.
|
They have 8 teaching positions open on their website, around 10% of the teaching slots more or less. If those are still open, it's a bad look indeed. Lots of other teachers will have to cover all those classes. |
The directors certainly won’t be covering them because they resigned this week, too. |
Which levels? All 3? |
Yes, there are none left. |
What were the reasons and circumstances? |
If you have to ask this you must not know much about this school and the way it treats people. |
