Will your DC wear mask to school when Youngkin lifts school mask mandate next week?

Anonymous
Thanks for the clarification. That makes sense.

The point is that if a student is unmasked and vaccinated, they will not need to quarantine when they are exposed in school. They will not have to miss school just because they were unmasked sitting next to someone who tested positive.

Here's my issue with lifting the mask mandate in schools. My kids WILL get omicron and they WILL pass it to me and my husband. I work in a mandatory in-person job so if I test positive for Covid or am exposed to it, I have to take at least a week off of work.

Not all Nova school districts have the same isolation or quarantine policies and some of them do not follow the floor set by the CDC. For instance, Arlington is requiring 10 days of isolation for students who test positive while Alexandria requires 5 days. Close contacts include anyone who is within 3 feet of another masked student or 6 feet of another student with a mask exemption. The radius expands when students are unmasked and it will capture ore close contacts who need to quarantine for 5 days. And keep in mind, the proportion of students ages 5-11 who are vaccinated is under 30%.

For those touting how students in other countries do not need to wear masks, the UK is requiring masks for secondary students amidst Omicron and in all grades, students test twice a week (three times a week in Wales). Germany tests students twice a week as well. Which Virginia school district is testing this frequently?

Everyone is going to get Omicron masks or no masks

Well I’m shocked at the people willing to experiment on their kids with a new injectable technology.

I’ve been amazed for years at parents who raise their kids on crap food and the tv.

My children have been aware since very early in that this was never a risk to children and even less so because we raised them with health in mind. They know that pharmaceutical companies that have had to pay out millions for damaging/killing people with (some) if their FDA-approved products are not the source of their health.

Most kids don’t like to stick out so they may not be the first to drop them.

At least the loudest people complaining at my school about masks are the parents who refuse to get vaccinated themselves. This is my issue with the opt out.

This. They are also the ones dining out, traveling, and visiting unvaxed family. It’s self selecting.

Exactly. The first ones to opt out are the ones we should ALL be concerned about — and I worry for their children the most. These are the families are are spreading Covid and they don’t care because they don’t think it exists.

PP: Did you vaccinate your children for school entry? Get the flu shot annually? Give them Tylenol when they have pain or an ache? How do you thread that needle with your kids (who I assume are older if you are having these discussions with them)?

My child (middle school) will continue wearing a mask. If you like your kids' teachers being present, and schools not shutting down due to sick staff, I'd suggest you have your kids do the same.

Tell that to my 5yo who has covid and almost had to be taken to the ER.

I am so sorry. Your experience is why the parent selfishness in this thread objecting the rather limited sacrifice of their children wearing masks in school is so frustrating.

Wow, I guess it's a good thing you know your kids' limitations. But I work daily to make sure my kids are those kids.

I’m a former teacher, current long term sub who will also quit rather than work in a school where omicron is raging and kids aren’t wearing masks. The $150 per day is certainly not worth risking a disease whose consequences aren’t fully understood. I imagine there are lots of other teachers and especially subs who feel the same way.

+1 So you should not care about the mask mandate being lifted. Everyone will catch it. A lot of people (perhaps yourself included) probably already caught it and didn't even realize. If your job is deemed "important," as in a teacher, airline employee, health care worker, etc, then you will only have to quarantine for 5 days.

What are the chances your student keeps the mask on?

Never underestimate the power of peer pressure. Other students don't have to say anything, either. Students want to fit in to the scene and not look awkward. A tale as old as time.

Sorry. There aren't that many anti-mask nut jobs in Northern VA.

You'd be surprised.

I went to Lowes and met a lot the other day....it's concerning.

I feel the opposite way. I don’t see how their poorly worn masks are doing anything and hear how schools have been open without masks throughout the pandemic. I will enforce whatever rules my district, FCCPS sets. I am concerned they want to mask forever and will keep the mask mandate next year too. If that’s the case I will go to any district nearby that doesn’t require them.

I’m in FCCPS and think a lot of people here want to mask forever. Please stay and be a reasonable voice! My kids will keep masking because it makes them feel comfortable and they’re very aware of the social blow-back they’d get if they unmasked. I’ll leave it up to them to decide if/when they stop wearing masks once it’s no longer mandated.

A lot there do want to mask forever. While I would love to be a reasonable voice, I will never speak up because that would not be well received by those making the highest decisions. The mask forever and push on vaccinations is a turn off for many. I am fully vaccinated and boosted but do not like the constant pressure on parents to vaccinate and booster their children. I think it should be a personal decision and find it overreaching and upsetting. I can only say that on an anonymous forum. I believe in vaccines but think it’s up to parents to decide for their own children and don’t like the constant announcements, emails and tweets.

FCCPS has instituted a "vaccine passport"-you cant attend indoor sporting events nor musicals without a vaccine--I believe even the 5-11 kids need the "passport"---will this stay legal under Youngkin?

Totally pro vax here but FCCPS has really created a hostile atmosphere, if you dont subscribe to "Dr" Noonan, DR or ED SCIENCE LOL then you feel like living as a gay person in the most homophobic town back in the 50s.....so at a certain point---can I pay these taxes and support this hostility? Or the bigger question is--do I want to?
