Yeah and that one person doing 3 people work gets rewarded with more work but eventually gets pissed and leave. Then I have to train some 21 year old from scratch. |
+1 I know we love to fetishize small businesses in this country but they are often guilty of underpaying and exploiting people. |
I've seen the impact of the anti-work movement throughout the holidays, but no more so than when I recently went to the Clarksburg Outlets. The Nike store had a sign that they were closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
I assume it's due to an employee shortage, but I can't imagine how much it's costing them in business. Plus, I can't believe they can get away with not being open daily without getting fined by the Outlet. |
Here's one example of why anti work is gaining traction:
Contractor does 300k in business for his employer and was promised 1k in bonus for every 150k in work. Was instead given one pair of socks. https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/rtqxe3/im_a_skilled_tradesman_who_is_supposed_to_get_a/ |
I’ve notic f a lot of this in my fb feed. F was like manipulation. |
Cry me a river |
Here's a start: https://www.cnbc.com/2021/09/15/in-2020-top-ceos-earned-351-times-more-than-the-typical-worker.html |
There is a shortage of workers due to immigration policies and there are more flexible, higher paying jobs that are more appealing. People don’t have to put up with bad jobs anymore. |
I have a young friend that is basically in the anti-work movement. They think basically most work is propping up a racist inequitable system of capitalism. They are living in a sort of communal set up where they do a mutual food aid system with donated food, grow or make a lot of things themselves, get things from thrift or buy-nothing groups and then work gig jobs as necessary for cash. They have a college degree from a relatively elite school. It reminds me of the hippie communes but on a different scale. |
So open borders benefit the capitalists not the workers? |
How is this different from the labor movement? |
I think it’s fake. Dh has been unemployed for 2 mos despite 600 + applications. If the shortage was so real I think we’d see evidence |
What do you think the issue is? My company has tons of vacancies for white collar jobs (ranging from entry to C suite). We would typically get hundreds of applications, but now we barely get a dozen. Fwiw, your husband should remove his college degree graduation year and eliminate old experience if he’s 50+ (ageism is real). If he’s younger and still not getting a job after 600 applications, then something is wrong. Get a career coach or recruiter. |
I'm also Asian-American. When people talk about humanities and arts being "useless", what they really mean is that they aren't obvious paths to lucrative jobs. They conflate high incomes with value to society. I have a high income, but I understand that it doesn't reflect my value to society. Many other high income people I know, especially in finance, say the same. But it won't stop people calling less-lucrative fields of study "useless". The implication, of course, is that lower income jobs are "useless". And then people wonder where the antiwork movement comes from. |
Please share some of those job postings then. I’d love to apply. |
