Schools closed January 3 and 4

Bowser seemed pretty clear that closures should be avoided unless staff was out due to COVID. So unless you test positive yourself, you shouldn’t need virtual lesson plans. But it’s certainly good to prepare for that eventuality.

Bower can say anything and then the tables will turn.

True. But I think decision makers (outside of local teachers unions and some school boards) have learned at this point that virtual school is not a serious alternative.

DCPS just took 5 elementary schools virtual for tomorrow/wed (see other thread) - I know some have concerns about false positives, etc - but currently a bit more concerned about actual positives and keeping schools open...so bring on the testing - even if its not perfect, its a worthy move that I hope builds collective support over the next 2 weeks..as we certainly want our kids to safely stay in school as there is much agreement on...

No, that’s not the case. Virtual is the alternative if needed. Will we have it for the rest of the year, absolutely not but for up to a month? Yes, I think that can happen.

Distribution/testing days. Could you imagine the uproar if it was required?! The antivaxx crowd and the anti mask crowds would be near riot.

Right. And you know the antivax crowd/others who are just over it all will not be engaging in this testing. This will all yet again fall on the vaxxed people who have been doing as they’re told this whole time (and those families were likely to be rapid testing at home after being in groups/traveling anyway). This is a whole huge logistical nightmare that once again burdens kids because we have chosen schools as our scape goat for community spread while the bars, restaurants, theaters, and so forth stay open.

We opted our kids out of DCPS testing. No way we're going to test them before school starts up again.

I doubt more than a relatively small percentage of people will take the Mayor up on her offer.

Ummm did you notice the hours long waits at pretty much every testing site today? Perhaps the store shelves completely empty of rapid tests? The vast majority will test and are already doing so.

Sure they will.

And if you believe that….

💯 kids have been out of school long enough. Distribute the tests Th/F and resume school as planned on 1/3. Most people need to go back to work that day and can’t afford to take any more time off.

JFC people it’s a damn public health emergency and they’re trying to keep kids in schools. Do you want the alternative?? It’s almost as if you just want all kids to get sick. I’m not a teacher and deeply suspect you’re not in education either, but I suspect logistically it takes time to distribute it without creating a mass spreader event.

The way we shit all over them constantly, we truly deserve the massive teacher shortage that’s coming.

Ooh, this going to make the moms who have been bragging all month on DCUM about how they were going to travel as much as they damn well pleased, roll in the night before school started, not test their kids because “HURR DURR who cares if it’s positive? It’s just a cold” mental.

Here for it.

It’s about staffing. From the chancellor’s email to staff:

If further adjustments are needed to your school’s opening based on the results of staff tests, we will communicate those as early as possible. Families should currently plan for schools to reopen on Wednesday, January 5.

The covid cases are really stacking up. My DD has now had three friends at school test positive. She is negative…for now.

Exactly! And these other parents whining about not making folks organize testing on New Years Day.

They are making teachers come in on 1/3 and 1/4 to pass out the tests. They can’t make teachers come in over the break. This isn’t some sort of extra days off for teachers and staff. They will be in the buildings handing out tests.

Congratulations on test and stay! It’s a game changer for providing kids the best opportunity to learn. Stay in the classroom!
