Maryland Travel Teams for HS aged players

Anonymous
Can someone give me a rundown on the options for travel ball for high school players? I've seen DigIn and DMV Prospects, but would love more information about them. Is that it? Guessing the teams this summer are set, but hoping to have DS try out in late summer for fall 2026/summer 2027 teams. New to the area. TIA

Listing the sport might help.

Not OP but it's baseball.

OP, which area do you live, and how competitive are you looking for? KOA and OBGC (Olney) are also established organizations.

.

In MoCo, add Sandy Spring Falcons.

There are also many outside of MoCo. Join one of the Maryland travel baseball Facebook groups and look for tryouts according to your son’s age. Or post your son’s age, position, etc.

Most tryouts happen in June, not late summer.

Talk to other parents. The two orgs you mention in your OP can be polarizing and yield really different experiences, depending on the coach and your experience with the top- level men who run the business. I would not recommend either.

OP here--We are new to the area (North Bethesda), so don't have parents to talk to about different organizations. The two I mentioned in my post were two that came up in internet searches. Can you elaborate on the polarizing/yield really different experiences comment? DS is a possibility for playing D3, but I would say D1 is unlikely.

How old was your son on May 1, 2026, and when is anticipated graduation year?

The best advice I can offer is to get into the Facebook groups, go to tryouts, see what you think of the coaches and recruiting directors, and maybe chat up other parents.

Look at the planned schedule - will your child be playing in front of college scouts or local tournaments?

Dig In typically has one or two high level teams and then multiple “regional” teams that are just there to bankroll the high-level teams.

The same is true of Ole Liners based in Gaithersburg.

Look into KOA Waves showcase teams, as well as Sandy Spring.

The Prospects have not fielded very good teams in recent years, and the parents were not happy with the org or the coaching. It’s a lot of talk and bluster, but low quality.

Connect with your high school baseball coach to ask about a summer baseball team with future high school teammates. Also, depending on age and ability, connect with a local training facility and maybe start going to college camps or individual showcases.

Did he play spring ball for his HS? (Not sure when you moved, or if you have moved yet) If so, ask teammates where they play.

If not, join your local travel ball group on Facebook. Also ask the HS coach about summer workouts etc. In our area, the high schools play summer legion ball, as well (it is optional- some do travel ball instead, some do both).

If you live in Montgomery County and are a top level player, I reccomend the Prospects.

Can you please share more? Are you a parent? None of the top players at our high school play there.

OP here--moving at the end of the school year. DS is class of 2029 so finishing freshman year now. We've sort of written off playing with a team this summer because of the move and a family trip, but trying to make sure we find the right teams to try out for this summer for the fall/next summer.

NP - good idea to think about how much driving is feasible for your family. Believe me, it can get exhausting. I am scarred by my son playing on a “national” team out in VA several years back that has since folded. No team is perfect, but it sure is nice when driving to practices is conveniently located. And PS, I think older teams for SS falcons are now under the BOSS baseball organization, however tryouts haven’t been posted yet.

OMG TJ! I didn’t realize you are a DC Urban Mom hahaha

OP - just to be clear, don’t go with Prospects unless you talk to the other parents and you like the coaches A LOT. (Some of the coaches are also meh.) The director is full of himself, treats kids like commodities, and none of the college coaches he claims as friends even respect or like him. Most parents can’t stand him. He is not there to build good teams and help kids get recruited. He is there to feed his ego and exert an irrational level of control over everyone and everything.

With maybe two exceptions, the current best players in MoCo most definitely do not play for Prospects. Most of their players are going D3, and you don’t need Prospects for that.

Good luck!

Who do they play for?

Google is your friend. Look at Prep Baseball, look at Game Changer for the teams that are headed to States, look at MSABC and All-Division teams, look at X. It’s not hard to find who kids play for. There is not one powerhouse org in MoCo. Also, many kids play for teams based outside of MoCo. I encourage you to find the right fit for your kid. An excellent place to start is definitely with your high school coach.

Coming from out of state so this is a little more challenging. Reached out to the HS coach where DS will (hopefully) play next spring but it’s been crickets. I understand that these programs are polarizing and people either seem to have a great experience or a terrible one so I guess we’ll just have him try out for a few that make sense geographically and see what happens.

If it’s not hard, why don’t you just answer the question instead of acting like an AH?

Seriously, what are you getting out of responding to an extremely simple question like this?
