Red line closures this summer

Anonymous
Several stations on the red line will be closed this summer for track work - do you think more telework will be offered? Particularly to feds. Anyone heard anything?

The VRE schedule is going to be messed up for years due to the Long Bridge construction project and some antiquated DC rule that the work can’t be done at night and there is no telework being offered.

Telework has never been offered due to metro closures in my experience.

But it has frequently been available to those who ask. OP should not expect an announcement telling people to telework for months, OP should ask to telework on a case by case basis because she would otherwise take leave for the day due to commuting issues.

If OP can’t figure out an alternative option for getting to work, they can waste their leave.

Or they can request work at home

In the past, our fed office allowed additional telework for long-term metro station closures if we try the commute and it's significantly longer. I haven't heard anything yet about this closure.

I would expect both NIH and WRNMMC to allow liberal telework and alternative work schedules during the shutdown for employees that can work remotely since the Medical Center stop will be closed. No idea about agencies at stops that are open or not on the red line.

It was in my office

Even in the Biden admin people at my agency didn’t get extra telework when the other half of the red line was shutdown all summer. They had to do stupid stuff like take the Marc train from Silver Spring to Union Station then travel backwards.

There are going to be free shuttle buses.

I would become familiar with SpotHero and save your pennies for gas and parking. Nothing logical or kind is done proactively for feds these days.

It's not about saving their leave, it's about getting the work done. I have a ton of leave. If my commute temporarily doubled I could take lots of half or whole days off to make my life better. But my manager's plans would suffer, which is his incentive to authorize telework.

We have been told that they are working on it and expect to be able to. Not naming my office/agency, sorry.

Estimated time is 45 minutes just for the shuttle bus each way..doubling many commutes.
