I suck at hydrating and it’s causing problems

Anonymous
I often only drink my coffee and some water to take meds and that’s it for the day. I just don’t feel thirsty. It’s become a problem for both my skin and now my bloodwork. I’m having some improper levels that my doc has attributed to being dehydrated.

I don’t know why I struggle with this so much. People tell me to set alarms on phone but I don’t have my phone during the work day.
I try to bring at least one large water bottle with me each day but I’m a parent and mornings are hectic so I often forget.

I guess I’m just venting I don’t know why I can’t seem to remember to do a fairly simple thing like remember to drink water and I’m annoyed at myself.

You know your putting yourself at risk for heart attacks and strokes being dehydrated right?

Hmm. What color is your pee? You don't want a bad doctor to attribute all your ills to dehydration. Your pee should be very pale yellow to practically clear. Maybe you can look in the toilet bowl and drink a large cup of whatever if you see that it's darker than that.

I have high blood pressure for reasons no one can explain. I'm 46, slender, eat low-salt naturally, because I don't like salt, I don't drink alcohol, don't smoke, exercise, sleep and hydrate. Sometimes stuff happens even when you do all the right things.

No they really aren't

I used to be the same. I’m also a teacher which means I cannot just use the bathroom whenever I need to. Some things that have helped me:
- New water bottle that I like to look at
- Get it ready first thing and put it by your bag
-add lemon/mint/oranges basically anything that makes it taste more appealing to you
- if you like ice, make sure the water bottle keeps it cold. I like Owalla for this reason.
- think of this as something you are doing for your kids. The better care you take of yourself the longer you are around for them.

Like I said, I used to be you. Now I crave water. I find the more I drink, the more I want. i just needed to create the habit.

I never drink water. I am also a teacher and can’t use the restroom whenever I need. And I had a bunch of kids and have no pelvic floor muscles left. What blood work is off? I haven’t seen anything off yet and I can’t imagine how I could remedy it.

Try alkaline water. Not sure why, but when I was breastfeeding and needed to drink water I found it more palatable and would chug it when I only tolerated regular water.

I guess it's possible that your blood was more concentrated if you took the tests dehydrated, skewing the results. Why not just drink a lot of water for a day or two and repeat? Then you'd see your actual levels are normal, and if you're not having symptoms, meh, probably not a big deal.

I hate flat water and prefer seltzer. Maybe that will work for you?

Another teacher here and that’s not an excuse. I drink water all day and use the bathroom 3 times at work. When I get there before classes start, at lunch, and right when classes end. I’m another middle age woman and just go more now anyway.

If any of us on my floor need to go, we text or email everyone around to see if anyone has two adults in the room who can cover. There are a lot of us older woman who need to use the bathroom frequently around. Stop using being a teacher as an excuse for not using the bathroom.

^ And I second flavored water. Have you tried that? Even diluted lemonade or fruit punch?

I'm like you---never thirsty enough to just drink liquids throughout the day. I don't like carrying water around (or drinking from water bottles at all, really), but if I pour myself a big glass of ice water when I'm at home I tend to be fine drinking that.

Can you drink a full glass when you take your medications? Otherwise, try smaller amounts of liquid (it doesn’t have to be water)- like 6oz with meals. Then, try to drink 6oz two hours before you go to bed.
