Portion size for your DH

My DH and I are at odds about what is typical food intake for a man.

Here is a typical daily log, which seems like way too much food.

breakfast:
Two egg omelette on a bagel with tomato and onion

Lunch:
6” deli meat sub, fruit slices, baked crisps

Snack:
Two handfuls of honey roasted peanuts

Dinner
Two chicken thighs, sautéed vegetables, starch like a 1-2 cups of potatoes au gratin or Mac and cheese.

That seems very normal to me except there would also be a shake or a smoothie or another protein snack in there.

Doesn't seem like that much food at all, especially if he is active.

He can decide what he needs to eat and you can decide what you need to eat. Controlling what each other eats or criticizing it is not a personality trait you want to have.

Why are you policing what a grown man eats?

Because he’s OBESE! BMI 33.

I assume he is underreporting on things like the mac and cheese.

Not active FYI.

That is probably 2100-2500ish calories a day depending on the quantity of potato and mac and cheese. Perfectly normal and healthy.

I just put it into Chat GPT - they also consider it a perfectly normal intake for a man. Slightly high in fat due to the peanuts but otherwise a very typical intake and with pretty good macros.

This could be fine, and it could be bad. Just depends on the person's body habitus and the amount of muscle v fat. Are they strong with lots of muscle? Muscle burns a lot more calories than fat. Are they 6'3" or 5'6"? These things matter.

My DH is only 5'7" but he's athletic and all muscle so he can eat whatever and never gains any weight. If you are flabby, it's another story, even if tall.

Hmmm. I think you are probably coming at this out of a place of love and concern but the way you are talking about this is pretty judgmental. It is not uncommon for a middle aged man to be medically obese. It is also not healthy. But he has to want to change. His DW nagging him is not going to cut it.

He is short, 5,5”, so need to subtract 500 calls

It's none of your business. Regardless of what he weighs.

Pressure almost always backfires, so if your goal is for him to be healthy you need to shut up. If your goal is to feel superior and you don't care about his health then keep arguing.

That looks totally normal. Do you have an eating disorder yourself?

I'll go ahead and say it. Past the age of 50 that is probably too much food to maintain weight. Most of us really can't get away with eating 3 full on-meals plus a snack daily every day, which is what you are listing. Two egg omelette with a bagel followed by a big lunch is a lot of food for the first part of the day.

I say what I said above and do want to be clear...you should not be tracking his food or having anything to do with his food. Stop.
