Dieting tricks

I noticed that my friend always eats only half of her food. She is, of course, thin.

I am a plate-cleaner considering a similar strategy. I don't think I could throw away half of my food regularly. But maybe I could do a third.

Have you seen dieting strategies out in the wild that seem to work, or do you use them yourself?

Drink water when you are hungry.

I started following a nutritionist's advice to have a protein and two veggies/fruits in every meal. I've lost about 15 pounds (145 -> 130; 5'4"). For the first time in decades, I started pushing away my plate because I felt full.

I used to be a clean plate person too - I guess the science is that I'm filling up on healthy food which is not ultraprocessed, so chemicals don't encourage me to keep eating. But the great part is that I don't have to think about it at all. And PP's point about water is another one - I now carry water with me all the time and try to be sure to drink throughout the day.

Small portions and mindful eating. If I want to indulge I take a small bite instead of a whole slice. I try to eat fruit for dessert. Low-carb works best for me.

If the mental block is clearing your plate (I get it), serve yourself less from the start.

We eat off salad plates at home. Makes your way more conscious of getting seconds and take breaks and listen to your body to see if it's full. More fiber and earlier in the meal helps too.

I like to log the calories of the whole meal but only take a small portion. I enjoy it slowly and wait a while and if im still hungry, eat the rest without guilt but if I'm not, I put it aside for later and then if I'm hungry later it's like woo, " free zero calorie food" because I already counted it. I find this really helps me eat according to my hunger cues which is something I struggle with.

Pick 1-2 healthy snacks and when hungry between meals, eat ONLY those snacks. Mine are cottage cheese and fruit. If I am hungry, that's what I eat. If they do not appeal, I am not actually hungry for a snack.

The best thing about glp-1 is that it eliminates the food noise. You only eat what you need. For me it's a smoothie with vitamins and protein mix in the morning and protein and veggies at night. I didn't think about food anymore. I used to be the person who ate a tub of ice cream at midnight.

I eat 2 meals a day and I have healthy snacks. Try not to eat after dinner. I'm 5'3 and a size 4. Age 57.

I serve myself the same portion as my elementary age kids. Sometimes I do get a little more later but in the past I would dole out “adult plates” for my husband and myself and I simply can’t eat as much as a man does without gaining. I wish I could!
Weight loss is such a joke for men. My husband cut out beer “except for weekends” and weight fell off that he didn’t even need to lose. I make all kinds of changes and just maintain.
