Why would someone choose a random neighborhood for custody exchanges?

Anonymous
I’m genuinely curious if anyone has insight into this…

I WFH and have noticed that about once a week (never the same day), two cars pull up in front of my house to do what appears to be a child custody exchange. I only notice because my dog alerts when the car stops out front. One arrives, then another shortly after, and then they transfer a small child along with bags, toys, a car seat, stroller, etc. It takes a couple of minutes and then both cars leave.

What puzzles me is, why here? My house is deep in a small, quiet neighborhood, not a through street, not public, and not particularly convenient or visible. I don’t believe either party lives nearby; I walk my dog frequently and have never seen either distinctive car otherwise.

If the goal is safety or neutrality, this seems like an odd choice as it’s somewhat isolated and a drive off the main road. How did they even come to the decision that this would be the place?

I’m not planning to say anything to them, just trying to understand the reasoning. Any idea why someone would select a specific random spot like this?

It's equidistant from two other locations and the parties are extremely pendantic.

Halfway between where the two of them live? Doesn't want to do it on a busy street so they can take their time and not stress out the kid? If it bothers you, come out when next they do it and tell them to do it somewhere else.

It's likely halfway between

This makes sense, but I wonder why they choose to come so far into the neighborhood?

It’s probably neutral and easily accessible for both parties. It’s chosen for some reason like it’s halfway between the two homes or one or both parties are familiar with the neighborhood through some prior association/experience.

Maybe one parent grew up there.

Maybe it's the exact halfway point- like, exact. And one or both parties are acrimonious and insist on not driving any further than exactly halfway.

Or maybe they know someone on that street so they're like "Cousin Larla's street is about the halfway point, let's plan on switching there".
It being a quiet street is probably a bonus. I've seen people do it in shopping center parking lots in the evenings too.

It definitely doesn’t bother me, it’s just so curious.

I suspect there is an equidistant location on 495 as well. For some reason, they didn't pick that location. It would have easy access to major roads.

+1 All of these things, plus what others have mentioned. Little kids with car seats being switched between parents can get emotional. A quiet street tucked out of the way is a good thing. The last thing you want to be doing is transferring kids and car seats and bags on a busy road.

That's strange they should have picked a shopping center parking lot, a doctors office parking lot or a school parking lot.

Maybe that's why

Tell the first car that comes to please pick a spot down the block in the future.
This is creepy. Gun violence a possibility you never know with study crap.

OP-you don't know anything about these people. You just seem to have a lot of time on your hands. Find a hobby..

Maybe grandma watches the child in the neighborhood and they don't want to exchange at her house.
