Covered dog playpen?

We got our small 12 week old, 2lb puppy a 36” play pen. We really liked it and had her bed, toys, treats, food and pee pad in there. We have 12 sides so it was large. Except she climbs out. She will be 7lbs fully grown so we’re shocked at this, but she climbs it like a ladder. The particular brand we bought doesn’t have a cover and we tried tying a blanket over the top but it’s so dark now she doesn’t like it. So we need to buy something new.

We have a dog walker and we stagger our work hours.

What is your alls set up for a puppy while you’re at work? We have a large dog kennel that she sleeps in in our room but it doesn’t seem big enough for the day. And she’s not potty trained yet (and she might get into something- we don’t trust a puppy!) to let her roam free.

Wow. What was the point of getting a dog? She is caged day and night…… Anyways, tether her while you work. Put her on a leash in your office. She will then be in sight and you know she is safe. Take her out to use the bathroom like clockwork and exercise her.

that puppy is too little to go to Doggy Day Care.

So your pen is 36" tall? That is very impressive that she can climb out. Maybe buy some plexiglass and fasten it to the inside so she can't climb?

I have a 17 pound dog who doesn't try to escape a 24 inch tall pen. Two sides of it are walls in a corner so it isn't even fastened to itself.

Aww. She's so talented!

Sorry, no advice.

Can you put a gate at the kitchen or something? That is what we did when my dog was a puppy -- we confined her to the kitchen by gating the door with a baby gate.

She’s caged 5 hours a day on weekdays and yes while we sleep. We don’t plan on caging her forever while we sleep (just sleeping in our room without a cage) and hopefully not during the day.

I don’t work at home obviously, so I can’t tether her. I’m hoping to get more telework soon. She gets lots of exercise from our 3 kids who adore her.

I’m shocked she can climb but she escapes in under a minute. She even can climb my parents backyard fence because it has chicken wire. I’ve never seen a tiny dog do either.

It’s not safe to leave a puppy out all day. She’s not a chewer yet but she could I’m sure. Or eat something that hurts her.

Can’t do doggy daycare. She’s too little and also hates other dogs. She’s into humans not dogs.

Crate train your puppy. Hire a dog walker.

Op here. This is the crate and we’re training her to use it. She’s jumping out. We have a dog walker.

This is not a crate. There's a reason we use actual crates, not playpens, to crate train. If you're not willing to do it right, that's fine, but don't try to bend the rules and then complain that the method you're not utilizing correctly isn't working. There's well-known dog psychology behind why crates (enclosed areas large enough for your dog to stand and turn around in, but not much more) work. A playpen isn't the same thing, and it doesn't work the same way.

The suggestion is that you actually crate train your dog, using an actual crate. This solves your problem(s). Again, you don't have to take it, but don't half-ass it and then complain it doesn't work.

She's not too little for day care onces she has her shots. She needs to be in a crate as if she's climbing that's unsafe.

This is what crates are for. Please crate train while your dog is still in a window of opportunity to do it correctly.

Also, it really sounds like you need a dog trainer asap if you are saying your dog does not like other dogs. You are about 6-8 weeks from having a really bad situation on your hands if your dog is not socialized, reactive, and fearful. Please, it is not fair to get a dog and then not set them up for success. Dogs suffer when they love a life of anxiety and fear.

You need to socialize her too.

A crate has panels on all sides. She vs. it jump out. That’s a playpen.

Dog trainer:

Use a real crate with full enclosure. It’s for the safety of the dog. I would never recommend a young small breed puppy go to daycare.

Enjoy I have a tiny climber too. 15 lbs of chaos but the best dog I’ve had.
