| Kid got rejected from Cornell. Excellent private school that sends 40% of kids to top 30 schools. They are top 30% of class. SAT of 1550. Humanities major. Any ideas on strategy for ED2? Going forward? TIA. Please be nice. |
| Lots of students have better results in RD, but it's time to review their list and make sure they've got some attainable options they'd attend. |
what GPA? and what is average GPA for a graduating class? |
|
There's nothing to do. That school is out of the running, so now hope for getting into another school. This is the whole purpose of applying to multiple schools.
Keep in mind a school is trying to create a diverse student body each year - they don't want all the kids to be the same. |
Any other results for calibration? It would be very helpful to have an EA safety/target admit. For RD, assuming you have a safety/target admit, then you can include 4-5 targets/high targets, 3-4 reaches. If you don't have an EA safety/target admit, I would be more conservative. |
| Add one or two more targets in R. |
In RD |

I believe ED2 is predatory, if not a scam. Limited selection of schools and acceptance rates are not much higher than RD.
Do they have a balanced list of schools for RD? I would definitely reach out to your school counselor for advice on RD list/strategy. |

What was it about Cornell that was appealing?
What are the schools on your child's list? Did counselor make any comments on what a weakness of the application might be? |
|
Understand that all of these schools are single digit admit rates and in ED, they are taking their athletes and legacies. An unhooked kid should not be applying to Cornell ED and your college guidance should have told you that (ask me how I know, LOL...BTDT)
That said, there are a ton of great schools that will accept ED2, so what is your kid's second favorite school? If they liked cornell, what about it drew them to it? Maybe Hamilton or one of the other rural NY schools tops the list? Otherwise, just focus on the attributes of target schools - big/small urban/rural open curriculum? Quarter versus Semester etc |
I would not rush or knee-jerk to an ED. It's normal to feel scattered and anxious after being a strong student who is rejected in ED. Your DC gave it their best shot and now will not have any regrets about "what if" with respect to Cornell and ED. What are your DC's other favorite choices? What subject in humanities is of most interest? Emory has a terrific creative writing program. Barnard could be a strong choice if DC is female. WashU loves strong private school students like your DC, as does Middlebury. Good luck OP! |
* corrected to ED2. (I wrote ED earlier which was a typo.) |
| Johns Hopkins could be a great fit too. |

We need to know GPA as related to their class.
If a top private school sends 40% to top30 schools you can count on at least half of them being hooked (in obvious and hidden (i.e. board member rec) ways). It may be that the only kids getting into top20 or even top30 schools ON THEIR OWN (no hooks, no donations, no board member etc recs) are top15% in the class. I would estimate this to be the case at my kid's private. 40% go to a top30 ("OOO! so impressive!" at first glance but behind the scenes there is so much extra stuff going on). |
| So the GPA is low(er)? They are only top 30 percent? Did the counselor advise ED to Cornell?? That seems really odd and a waste of ED. You have to go down the ranks like Tufts BC EDII. Add U Rochester Case Western Pitt to the RD rounds. |
