Trump Admin Hints Furloughed Workers May not Be Paid After Shutdown

Be careful Feds--new article in the WaPo today about threats to not pay federal workers post-shutdown. This isn't the first time that the Trump admin has indicated that Federal workers won't get paid despite it being the law to do so following a shutdown.

Administration hints furloughed workers may not be paid after shutdown

The Trump administration is sending notifications to federal staff suggesting only those who are working during the government shutdown will be paid when it ends, despite a 2019 law that guarantees pay to furloughed employees, too.

“Once an appropriation or continuing resolution is enacted, excepted employees are entitled to receive payment,” read one message sent to some portions of the government and obtained by The Washington Post. That sentence — which leaves out furloughed workers — was not included in the first furlough notice issued last month, according to an employee who, like others interviewed, spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution.

This is just an empty threat. That’s why they can just “hint”.

There are laws saying the contrary. Even the Supreme Court will reject an obvious violation of the law.

Congress may change the law to not pay furloughed workers for future shutdowns. But this shutdown will be paid.

I mean, if that happens, there will be a huge lawsuit.

Also what is going to happen to our health insurance? How are they going to get paid if we don't get backpay?

You have far more faith in the current court than I.

in LWOP situation it comes out of the first paycheck(s) after pay status starts, i think limited to a % of gross pay so no one ends up in a zero pay scenario.

Of course he will say that and want to do that. It's a continuation of vilification of the federal workers and "people who don't work". Which also applies to poor people in the MAGA view. DT is also famous for not paying contractors on his constructions projects who did work. A leopard doesn't change its spots.

Anyone who votes for anyone who is in currently congress (dem or rep) is stupid. Get everyone out. Every single person, except maybe Bernie but he’ll be gone soon anyway.

Why does each agency, and even divisions within agencies, have a different form furlough letter?

Ugh they are winning at completely demoralizing us. For the unpteenth time since the election, I’m feeling like a total loser for sticking with my job as a fed, even though my job is relatively safe from RIFs. Also, to respond to a person up thread — what happens to fed morale if there is a law passed stating that in the future furloughed Feds won’t get paid? Will anyone choose to continue being a fed (if other options exist)??

Empty threats and bluster.

There have been dozens of "huge lawsuits" with all the RIFs. But they all have the potential to end up with SCOTUS.

Congress still gets paid during a shutdown (unlike the average Fed.)

Don’t take the bait, you know they will get paid.

"Be careful" how, OP? This is completely out of our control. We're already living without paychecks, nobody i know is putting it all on a credit card with no worries.
